Image: Senchenko destroys Hatton; Quigg defeats Munroe; Murray and Rabchenko both winBy William Mackay: Scott Quigg (24-0-1, 17 KO’s) dominated former European and Commonwealth super bantamweight champion Rendall Munroe (24-2-1, 10 KO’s) tonight in stopping him in the 6th round to capture the interim WBA World super bantamweight title on the undercard of the Ricky Hatton vs. Vyacheslav Senchenko undercard at the Manchester Arena, Manchester, England.

Quigg, 24, knocked the 32-year-old Munroe down twice in the 6th round to get the stoppage. Quigg knocked Munroe down initially with a hard left to the body. Quigg then finished Munroe off with a hard right to the body that put Munroe down on one knee. The fight was then halted after Munroe couldn’t back to his feet.

This was the first time that Munroe had ever been stopped before in his 9 year pro career.

Quigg landed the cleaner and hard shots throughout, although he didn’t go after Munroe the way he should have. Quigg might have been able to score a much faster knockout had he gone after Munroe with a flurry, but he instead took his time and let Munroe come forward most of the fight. Munroe’s punches were mostly blocked on the gloves of Quigg, and he showed little in the way of power.

With this victory a fight between Quigg and Carl Frampton is something that you have to think about. It’s a great fight if it can be put together. Quigg doesn’t look ready to challenge WBA World super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux. He needs a little more seasoning before he takes that fight.

Unbeaten middleweight contender Martin Murray (25-0-1, 11 KO’s) stopped previously unbeaten Jose Navarro (12-1, 10 KO’s) in the 6th round of a one-sided fight. Murray, 30, knocked Navarro down twice in the fight, once in the 1st and a final time in the 6th. In the 6th, Murray dropped Navarro with a hard right hand. A badly hurt Navarro got back to his feet and was hit with a flurry of hard shots from Murray, causing Navarro’s corner to waive the white towel to have the fight halted.

Murray now has a potential fight against WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez coming up for April in Argentina if the fight can be made.

Murray said “I will go on to Argentina because I feel I can beat him.”
