Guerrero: Mayweather can’t escape the punishment I’m going to inflict upon him

1652(Photo Credit: Paul Hernandez) By Dan Ambrose: The light hitting WBC interim welterweight champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) is suddenly convinced that’s he’s become a slugger after closing the eyes of his last opponent Andre Berto last November in a foul-plagued performance by Guerrero in beating Berto by a 12 round unanimous decision.

You can make a pretty strong argument that Guerrero should have lost at least three points in that fight, and the outcome should have been a draw instead of a win for him due to his constant fouling.

Guerrero now believes he’s going to pound Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s) in the same manner when they meet on May 4th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Guerrero said “Believe me, Floyd is in trouble and there is nothing he can do to escape the punishment I’m going to give him. God has put me in this position for a reason.”

I think Mayweather will be okay in this fight just as long as there’s a referee that actually is doing his job and calling fouls. If there’s a referee working the fight like the one that worked the Guerrero-Berto fight, then I think Mayweather may have to turn medieval in the ring and start fouling with Guerrero because he’ll get beaten up with Guerrero’s holding and hitting, low blows and elbows.

Mayweather will have to fight the same way if it’s one of those referees that just stands there watching the fight all night without actually controlling the fighters. Mayweather probably won’t put up with the kinds of fouling that Guerrero got away with against Berto without retaliating any chance he gets, but hopefully it doesn’t come to that.

I hope Golden Boy Promotions screens the referee well so that they can make sure there are no repeats of the Guerrero vs. Berto fight because that’s not boxing; that’s more like MMA, and you can’t have a fight like that when there’s a title on the line and millions of fans are watching it around the globe. If Guerrero wants to fight like that then he needs to join the UFC and get in the cage with one of the wrestlers and go at it.
