Golovkin-Stevens: And new Middleweight champ is…

golovkin122By G Bell: A potential fight of the year bout seems to have slipped under the radar. Gennady “GGG” Golovkin vs. Curtis Stevens has the ability to be another Brandon Rios, Mike Alvarado 1, tilt. Both possess extraordinary power, and Stevens for one, has made it quite clear of his intentions on the night. His plan is to usurp the young lion Golovkin, claiming he plans on killing GGG when they meet.

Golovkin on the other hand, maybe due to his lack of English, but probably more to his demeanor, has avoided the trash talk. He’s only too happy to get back in the ring with anybody, since most of the middle weights have unashamedly been avoiding him.

Both he and Stevens share similarities in that they were both outstanding amateurs, both have great power, and both know how to finish an opponent. Saul Roman was Stevens’s last conquest, and we all saw what happened to Matthew Macklin at the hands of GGG. Although I’m a huge Golovkin fan, I fear Stevens might have what it takes to defeat him. No one has really tested Golovkin’s beard, and against a very tough Derrick Finley, Stevens proved he’s for real. I actually scored that bout at the least a draw, but Stevens walked away with the w.

Stevens has a very compact muscled frame and is the shorter of the two, which would mean, Golovkin should stay on the outside and box. That’s what most fighters with height and reach advantage would do, but not these two. Forget a feeling out round, these guys are going to come together at the sound of the bell, and we all know what happens when an immoveable object meets an irresistible force. Someone is going to sleep. These guys are just bigger versions of Rios and Alvarado. No off switch, no quarter given. This is really a blink and you might miss it fight. Kudos to Stevens and Golovkin for stepping up.
