Gervonta Davis: $100 MILLION cash, I’m coming to get it

By Matt Lieberman: Getting $100 million is on the mind of Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis as he looks forward to resuming his boxing career. The 25-year-old WBA ‘regular’ lightweight champion, Tank Davis (23-0, 22 KOs), has yet to make the kind of money that we’ve seen with the big stars in this era like Canelo Alvarez and Anthony Joshua.

For Tank Davis to get to the $100 million stages, he’ll need to pick off the top lightweights in Vasily Lomachenko, Teofimo Lopez, Ryan Garcia, and Devin Haney. Even then, Tank may need guys like Shakur Stevenson to make big bank.

While Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is predicting that Shakur rise to the same heights as Floyd Mayweather Jr, it’s likely that he won’t let him anywhere near a talented fighter like Tank Davis.

That would be a great fight if Arum were willing to let Stevenson fight Tank, but it’s probably not going to happen unless Davis starts looking vulnerable.

Tank Davis wants $100 million

It’s going to take a lot of suitable match-making by Mayweather Promotions to get Tank Davis to the stage where he’s making $100 million. According to Celebrity Net Worth, Gervonta’s net worth is $4 million. That’s a long way away from the $100 million that he wants.

It’s going to be interesting to see whether Mayweather Promotions can get Tank Davis the big fights that he wants and needs for him to be a big-money guy with $100 million sitting in his bank account collecting interest. Tank has been a pro since 2013, and he’s not made anything close to $100M.

If the way that Mayweather Promotions has matched Tank continues along the same path, he’ll never be a big moneymaker. During Mayweather’s career, he was willing to take risks in taking on the best fighters.

But when it comes to Tank, his promotional company isn’t matching him against the famous fighters he needs for him to become a big star in his own right.

David Benavidez: Tank Davis is a monster

“They all have so much potential; Ryan Garcia, Teofimo, they’re all bad dudes. They’re all super dudes,” said David Benavidez to Fighthype. “But I feel the one that’s a little more established right now because of his age is Tank. I’ve never seen Gervonta in the gym, but his fights, he’s a monster.

“I think if Devin Haney gets in the ring with Tank, it’s going to be an amazing fight. If Ryan Garcia gets in the ring with Tank, it’ll be an amazing fight. But I feel like these dudes and Teofimo too, they’re all great fighters, but I feel they need to be polished a little bit more.

“They need one or two more hard fights before they fight each other. But I feel like the person that can deal with that pressure a little bit more is Gervonta Davis because he’s been there. He’s been a star for the past three years, so mentally he’s already up there. But if these dudes do the same thing, it’ll be some great fights,” said Benavidez.

What Benavidez isn’t saying is that Ryan Garcia, Devin Haney, and Teofimo Lopez aren’t long for the 135-pound division. All three of them will soon be fighting at 140. The only guys that will be left are Lomachenko and Tank Davis. Even Lomachenko is thinking about moving back down to 130.

Unless the top lightweights fight each other soon, these big fights that Benavidez wants to see won’t ever materialize. You can’t blame the fights not being made on the fighters. It’s the promoters that are dragging their feet in making these matches, and unfortunately, we won’t see them happen. There’s too much focus on letting the big fights marinate.

Haney, Teofimo and Ryan Garcia emerging talents

“That weight division is firing up, man,” continued Benavidez. “I’m excited as a boxing fan to wait for the next couple of years to see who becomes the king out of that division because there’s a lot of potentials there. There’s a lot of change there. They could all be top dogs.

“It just depends on themselves. They’re all excellent. Devin Haney is super elusive, and Teofimo is elusive and powerful. I’ve never seen Ryan Garcia in person, but his last fight [against Francisco Fonseca] was very impressive.

“I just want to see them all fight each other. That’s going to be great for boxing when they all fight each other,” said Benavidez.

You can argue that the promoters are hoping that if they let the fights marinate the way Mayweather did with his big-money clash against Manny Pacquiao in 2015, they can bring in the same kind of revenue.

Benavidez leaning towards Lomachenko against Teofimo

“He’s really good,” said Benavidez on Teofimo Lopez. “I want to see if they make that [Vasiliy] Lomachenko fight happen.

“I can never go against Lomachenko, but I can’t go against Teofimo either. He looks like a young lion, and he really wants it. When I talk about me being the best, and it doesn’t matter who I go up against, that’s what I see in him [Teofimo]. I can’t even pick nobody. I just want to see the fight.

“Maybe,” said Benavidez when asked if Lomachenko could walk into a big shot from Teofimo. “You know, in his last couple of fights, he’s been getting a little hurt. When he fought [Luke] Campbell, he got hurt.

“So I feel like his [Lomachenko] isn’t holding up with these bigger guys. I’m pretty sure he’ll figure it out. If he has a game plan, I’m pretty sure he’s going to look magnificent, so I can’t wait to see him,” said Benavidez.

WBA/WBC/WBO lightweight champion Lomachenko (14-1, 10 KOs) is starting to show his age, and he’s starting to get hit a lot. In Lomachenko’s last fight against Luke Campbell, he was on his bike the entire night, looking to keep from getting hit by the big southpaw.

Although Loma won the fight by a lopsided 12 round decision, it was far from an easy win like we’d seen from him in the past. Lomachenko is getting hit a lot now, and forced to rely on his footwork more than ever before.

Tank Davis and Ryan Garcia trash-talking

“😂200k He needs that money back from him buying that Ferrari. Stop trying to keep up broke boy!” said Tank Davis to Ryan Garcia in reacting to the news of him being offered just $200,000 to fight on July 4.

Ryan Garcia fires back at Tank Davis:

“Yeah, I get endorsement deals outside of boxing, something you don’t know about bc you hit women,” said Ryan Garcia in response to Tank Davis.

Ryan Garcia (20-0, 17 KOs) was pretty upset last week after it was revealed by Sports Illustrated that he was offered $200,000 to fight on July 4. Garcia, 21, feels that he’s worth more than that, and he wanted DAZN to contact him directly.

Ryan’s promoters at Golden Boy Promotions are in a bad position because there aren’t any live gates. The crowds won’t be there for Ryan – or any fighters’ matches – for the time being.  Tank Davis still hasn’t fought during the pandemic. When he does, it’ll be interesting to see how much Mayweather Promotions pays him if his fight is behind closed doors.

Tank Davis wants to fight Leo Santa Cruz on pay-per-view, but it remains to be seen if that’ll happen. This is not the ideal time to have pay-per-view in the United States, with so many people still unemployed.
