By Scott Gilfoid: Trainer Robert Garcia believes that it’s time for WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) to step it up and start facing bigger and better fighters rather than languishing at lightweight and beating up on smaller guys with limited skills.
Garcia shot down the idea of Broner ever facing one of his guys like former WBA lightweight Brandon Rios. Garcia sees it as impossibility due to the two fighters working for different promoters.
Garcia said to thaboxingvoice.com “Broner still got some work to do; he needs to fight bigger guys, bigger names. Brandon’s [Rios] already proven.”
It’s true that Broner needs to move up in weight to light welterweight or preferably welterweight to face bigger guys with bigger names that the boxing public cares about. For some reason Broner isn’t too excited about moving up in weight to 140 or 147. He keeps he’s still young, and wants to clean out the lightweight division.
The fact of the matter is Broner pretty much already did clean out the lightweight division when he beat the top guy in Antonio DeMarco last year. The other guys aren’t as good DeMarco, and he could end up wasting a lot of time if he sticks it out at 135 to try and accomplish his goal of beating all the top guys at this weight.
Broner is scheduled to fight on June 15th on HBO at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Broner’s promoters at Golden Boy are going to try and get WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns for that date, but that’s not likely to happen. Broner will more likely have to be satisfied with facing one of the contenders that have been hanging around for a while. Hopefully, Broner gets a clue after the fight and moves up to light welterweight where he can finally go after some big names.
