Image: Fury vs. Johnson on December 1st in BelfastBy Steven Ocallaghan: After the pointless heavyweight title defences from the brothers Klitschko, it’s good to see an up and comer facing a decent and capable fighter heavyweight Tyson Fury (19-0, 14 KO’s) is taking on former world title challenger Kevin “Kingpin” Johnson (28-2-1, 13 KO’s) on December the first in Belfast, which with a win should put him in the frame for a title shot by next summer.

After four consecutive stoppages the 6’9″ Fury is taking on a tough fighter in Johnson. It’s good to see two decent fighters face off considering all the hype surrounding unbeaten heavyweight prospect Deontay Wilder (25-0, 25 KO’s).

At 27, Wilder is yet to face anybody of even a mediocre standard, considering his last fight was against a guy who was 5’11”, 39 year-old and who weighed over 100lbs over his normal fighting weight. Wilder’s next fight is fairly unimpressive also. Kelvin Price, at 37 has only had 13 fights, even though he holds a 6 round S/D win over Tor Hamer 30 months ago, that for me doesn’t put you up there deserving of a fight against a top ten ranked opponent.

After the calling out of Fury during the summer, Wilder decides to finally take on a guy ranked just inside the top 100, maybe after another 2 or 3 fights he might deserve to face a Fury or a Johnson.

I find it quite funny that Wilder lovers have a go a David Price for fighting Audley Harrison and Matt Skelton when Wilder has had over twice the amount of fights that Price has had, at least Price has had title fights.

Johnson holds a first round stoppage over Harold Sconiers, who had Wilder on chicken legs and almost got the stoppage and also gave the young and big Richard Towers a tough fight.

Fury v Johnson is a good match-up and one that is creditable. Maybe one day Wilder can say he was in a meaningful fight, but don’t hold your breath.
