Fury-Johnson fight to be a WBC heavyweight eliminator

Image: Fury-Johnson fight to be a WBC heavyweight eliminatorBy Scott Gilfoid: The World Boxing Council has decided for whatever reason to make the Tyson Fury (19-0, 14 KO’s) vs. Kevin Johnson (28-2-1, 13 KO’s) to be a WBC heavyweight title eliminator with the winner of the fight to become the mandatory challenger for WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko.

I don’t think that was a good move by the WBC because this could set up a rematch between Johnson and Vitali, and we already saw Johnson get badly beaten by Vitali in 2009, and I don’t see anything changing in a second fight.

Johnson doesn’t have the offensive weaponry to beat a guy like Vitali. And if Fury beats Johnson this Saturday, which I don’t see happening, Fury isn’t likely to take the fight with Vitali because Fury prefers fighting Wladimir Klitschko.

As such, the WBC could have very little to show for making the Fury-Johnson fight an WBC eliminator. What they should have done is made it a semi-final eliminator with the winner having to face Kubrat Pulev or the winner of Chris Arreola vs. Bermane Stiverne.

That way if Johnson wins he has to get past one of those guys to get a second fight with Vitali. And if Fury beats Johnson, he would have to fight his first heavyweight opponent with excellent power, and I don’t think Fury would do well getting hit hard by the likes of Arreola or Stiverne. Also, if Fury decided to skate out and not fight the Arreola-Stiverne winner, then one of those two would be Vitali’s next opponent by default.

I’d also favor Pulev over Fury because of his excellent jab. Pulev would likely beat Fury with that weapon alone. It wouldn’t take much more than that for him to do the job.

Johnson is going to do a number on Fury this Saturday night in Belfast, Northern Ireland with his powerful jab. Fury is going to find out first hand how hard it is to get past that jab, and I think he’s going to end up with a pizza face by the end of the fight.
