Image: Froch vs. Mack this Saturday in NottinghamBy Scott Gilfoid: IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (29-2, 21 KO’s) fights Yusaf Mack (31-4-2, 17 KO’s) this Saturday night at the Capital FM Arena, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, United Kingdom. Froch, 35, can’t afford any slip ups in this fight because a loss here will erase his dreams of a murderers row of top fighters that he wants to fight against Lucian Bute, Mikkel Kessler and Andre Ward.

Froch has fought a number of tough opponents in the last few years in Jermain Taylor, Jean Pascal, Andre Dirrell, Arthur Abraham, Glen Johnson, Mikkel Kessler and Andre Ward. Froch has struggled in virtually all of those fights, and is lucky that he has more than two wins out of that bunch.

Froch thinks he can run the table by beating Mack, Bute, Kessler and Ward in that order followed by retirement. However, it’ll look really bad if Froch can’t even get past the 32-year-old Mack on Saturday because this is supposed to be the the easiest fight of the bunch.

I don’t think it will be, especially if Mack doesn’t run out of gas likes he’s done in some of his losses in the past. If Mack’s stamina holds out, Froch is going to be in for a world of hurt because Mack is a sturdy, more powerful version of Bute. He’s got more power and he’s lot more solidly built than Bute.

Froch wants to try and steamroll over Mack in the same way that he did Bute, but we could see Froch’s chin dented if he tries that trick with Mack. This guy will meet Froch’s power and give it right back to him and then some. Froch hasn’t fought anyone that’s looked to consistently tag him in the head the way that Mack will. Of the best guys that Froch fought most of them only hit Froch sporadically. They didn’t look to drive him into the canvas by going toe-to-toe with him the way that Mack will.

Jermain Taylor briefly did when he had Froch on the canvas in round three, but then Taylor tired out an stopped punching. Dirrell had Froch hurt, as did Kessler. But those guys like him off the hook by not following up with big power shots to finish him off. If Mack can get Froch hurt then we’ll see him look to finish him off.
