Image: Froch-Bute: Another massive fight for the CobraBy Alex Sharpno: Carl Froch fights at the weekend to try and become a three time world champion at super middleweight, he faces current champion Lucian Bute at the Capital FM arena. This for me is an extremely tough fight to call.

On one hand we have Froch a tough fighter willing to walk through shots to land his own and on the other side we have Lucian Bute a very tricky customer with excellent power. Bute also is able to generate great power in close with his body shots which when landed I believe could stop any fighter in the division. I for one do not believe Bute has been in with anyone nearly as good as Froch and when you add the hostile atmosphere he is going to be facing it could well end up a bad night for him.

I for one do not believe Carl gets the credit he deserves by the nation. Other fighters seem to hog the limelight while The Cobra is traveling the world fighting massive fights against the best the world has to offer.

Carl has two losses on his resume. As far as I am concerned Andre Ward is one of the top two fighters in the world along with Floyd Mayweather. In his fight with Ward I do not believe Carl did himself any harm at all, there is no shame whatsoever in losing to a fighter as good as Andre Ward, the guy is a class act in and out of the ring. I do believe though if Carl had really gone for it in the first half of the fight it may have been different but who knows. In his loss to Mikkel Kessler I really believe Carl lost the fight in the first four rounds and had he come out banging would have won a decision. Also the fight with Kessler was an absolute classic with both guys taking risks and taking some huge shots, it was a definite fight of the year contender. The Cobra did himself no harm whatsoever in these two fights. He showed massive heart and guts to go over and fight Kessler away and put on the show he did, and he gave Ward the best fight of anyone in the super six.

Next I would like to clear up the matter of the fight with Andre Dirrell. When you go to fight away for a world title you have to fight to win, you cannot expect to steal a decision as Dirrell tried to do in Nottingham. It was almost embarrassing to watch how scared Dirrell was to engage with Froch. Also the amount of holding this guy was doing was pathetic and it is no wonder Carl ended up getting frustrated with Dirrell and throwing him down. This was supposed to be a fight was it not. It’s funny how a certain Amir Khan was ripped to pieces for holding Maidana in round ten of their fight yet when Dirrell does it, its ok. Yes, okay, Dirrell did have some success in the fight but I suspect had he tried to trade he would have been stopped. It is not fair to keep talking about Dirrell being amazingly talented, well heart, determination and guts also play a massive part in boxing and Carl Froch has all of these things in abundance.

We talk about the likes of Floyd Mayweather and Andre Ward being the best fighters in boxing and there is no doubt about that at all. They are both excellent defensive fighters with pin point accuracy and excellent hand speed. It would also be fair to say though their fights are not always the most exciting to watch. Now if we judged fighters on how exciting their fights were surely Carl would be in the top ten pound for pound. He puts everything on the line in every fight when you look at his last fights it shows that he only wants to fight the best in the business and not many fighters can say that nowadays.

Andre Ward
Glenn Johnson
Arthur Abraham
Mikkel Kessler
Andre Dirrell
Jermaine Taylor
Jean Pascal

After you add Lucian Bute to that list it looks even more impressive. His fights with Kessler and Pascal were absolute classics and the determination he showed in his last minute KO over Jermaine Taylor was amazing. It amazes me he is not the biggest draw in the country because he certainly is the most entertaining fighter we have.

Let’s be honest when we tune into a fight we want to see a good old tear up and the Cobra is always up for that. I for one have my ticket and cannot wait for the fight on Saturday. Lucian Bute is a great fighter and for me it is definitely a toss up fight, but one thing is for sure, win lose or draw Carl will give his all and put on a great show for his fans. So show some respect for one of the most entertaining fighters in the business.
