Donaire: Mares likely won’t make an impact at featherweight

mares3333By Chris Williams: WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire sees a potentially bleak future for Abner Mares when he starts campaigning a featherweight this year after moving up. Donaire doesn’t say why he thinks Mares won’t succeed, but it’s hard to take him seriously because anyone with two eyes can see that Mares will not only succeed at featherweight, but he’ll be a star at this weight.

Speaking with Philstar.com, Donaire said “I don’t think Mares wouldn’t have beaten [Victor] Terrazaz, and it’s not likely Mares will make an impact at featherweight.”

It’s hard to imagine Donaire being serious about this because Terrazaz has never shown the kind of ability that would lead to him beating someone like Mares. Terrazaz did beat Fernando Montiel in 2011 by a 12 round unanimous decision, but it was a really close fight.

Donaire isn’t giving Mares much credit if he honestly thinks Terrazaz could beat Mares because you only need to take a look at one round of the Terrazaz vs. Montiel fight to know that Terrazaz would never be able to compete with someone like Mares.

Mares will succeed at featherweight because there are three vulnerable champions in Daniel Ponce De Leon, Chris John and Billy Dib that Mares could clearly beat without any problems. The only champion that Mares would likely struggle with is Mikey Garcia, but I think Mares might be able to beat him as well if he can block his power shots and get in close to wear him down the way that Orlando Salido was starting to do when their fight was stopped last month.

Mares might be able to wear Mikey down with pressure and body shots. But Mares would definitely beat the other three champions in the featherweight division no problems.

Donaire thinks Golden Boy Promotions, the promoters for WBC super bantamweight champion Abner Mares, sent him a phony $3 million offer for a fight with Mares.

Donaire reportedly thinks it was a fake contract to get him to look bad for not agreeing with it, causing some boxing fans to think he’s ducking Mares. In addition to that, Donaire thinks it was a move to try and get him to lose his April 13th fight date on HBO.
