By Jim Dower: Super middleweight contender Dmitri Chudinov (21-2-2, 13 KOs) pounded out an 8 round unanimous decision in beating journeyman Siarhei Khamitski (30-15-3, 14 KOs) on Saturday night on the undercard of the World Boxing Super Series fight between Callum Smith and Nieky Holzken at the Arena Nurnberger in Nuremberg, Germany. The scores were 78-73, 78-73 and 78-73.

Chudinov was pressuring Khamitski the entire fight and taking good shots to land his even bigger punches. Chudinov didn’t let up and that was the difference in the fight. He was able to push a fast pace and force Khamitski to fight harder than he wanted to or was capable of.

Chudinov lost his previous fight to 45-year-old Lolenga Mock by a 10 round unanimous decision. Before that loss, Chudinov had put together a 6-fight winning streak after being stopped in the 12th round by Chris Eubank Jr. in February 2015. Chudinov moved up to super middleweight after his defeat to Eubank Jr., and he’s mostly done well in this weight class. The loss to Mock was something of a surprise though, as he’s up there in age. He outworked Chudinov and won a wide 1 round unanimous decision.

The 43-year-old Khamitski was brought in as a replacement to face the 31-year-old Chudinov after his opponent Holzken was pulled from the fight and used as a replacement for Juergen Braehmer to face Callum Smith in the main event. Khamitski gave it his best shot tonight, but he didn’t have the youth, strength or the work rate to keep up with the younger Chudinov.

The loss for Khamitski was his 4th in his last 5 fights. It didn’t used to be that way. Khamitski beat Frank Buglioni by a 6th round knockout 4 years ago in April 2014. He also defeated Adam Etches by a 4h round knockout in March 2015. Things haven’t gone well for Khamitski since then with losses to John Ryder, Stanislav Kashtanov, Alfonso Blanco and Chudinov. Those are good fighters, so it’s not as if Khamitski has anything to be ashamed of.

Had Chudinov faced Holzken tonight, he would have had a good chance of beating him as easily as he did Khamitski. There’s a huge experience difference between Chudinov and Holzken.

Chudinov has a long ways to go before he can be considered as one of the better fighters in the 168 lb. weight class. He’s got to work on his punching power for him to compete with the best in the super middleweight division. His lack of hand speed is going to be a problem regardless. That’s something Chudinov will never be able to fix.
