DeGale vs. Brand fight postponed

degale213By Scott Gilfoid: The March 23rd bout between WBC Silver super middleweight champion James DeGale (14-1, 9 KO’s) and the hard hitting Colombian Alexander Brand (19-1, 15 KO’s) has been postponed until a still to be determined date.

There’s no word about why precisely the DeGale-Brand fight is being pushed back, but rumors are that ticket sales were less spectacular for the event at the Glow, Bluewater, Greenhithe, Kent, United Kingdom.

I mean, you know things are bad when you find yourself a week away from the fight and the other fighters on the undercard Phill Fury, Chris Eubank Jr. & Sammy Cantwell – still don’t have scheduled opponents. God, I could only imagine what would be dragged out to face them.

Maybe DeGale’s promoter should cut his losses and look to pair the DeGale-Brand fight on the undercard of one of Tyson Fury’s cards instead of expecting DeGale to sell tickets. I don’t know if DeGale has the star appeal at this point to pull in crowds, and you can blame that on soft matchmaking. The guy should have been stepped up against quality opposition by now.

I give Brand a real chance of beating DeGale if this fight ever does take place. He’s got the fight hand power to knock out anyone in the division, and DeGale is a lazy fighter that likes to rest against the ropes and eat right hands. Brand seems to knock most of his opponents out when they’re resting against the ropes the way that DeGale does.

DeGale said on his twitter today “Gutted! Just been told my fight on 23 March has been postponed. New date to be confirmed.”

DeGale’s promoter Mick Hennessey is supposed to be coming out with a word about when the fight will be rescheduled, if it ever will be.

This actually could be a lucky break for DeGale because it gives him more time to prepare for Brand, and to figure out a way to keep from getting hit by his big right hand shots. Believe me, one big right hand from Brand and we could see DeGale taking a long nap on the canvas.
