Curtis Stevens could face Gennady Golovkin in November

stevens3By Allan Fox: If #6 IBF, #10 WBC, middleweight contender Curtis Stevens (24-3, 17 KO’s) is able to get past his August 3rd opponent Saul Roman (37-9, 31 KO’s) in what will likely be a slugfest, then Stevens could wind up facing WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin next on November 2nd.

Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions is interested in using the 5’7” Stevens as Golovkin’s next challenger, provided that Stevens beats Roman next month at the Mohegan Sun Casino, in Uncasville, Connecticut, USA.

Loeffler said to RingTV “If Stevens wins on August 3rd, he might get his wish, as we are planning the next fights for GGG. I have a feeling his bark is louder than his bite if he really is offered a shot at the most feared middleweight champion. If he wins, GGG would have no problem fighting him.”

Stevens badly wants the Golovkin fight. He’s been talking about Golovkin to anyone that listens to him and he likes his chances in beating him.

Stevens would give Golovkin the opportunity to face another hard hitting middleweight. He’s probably got similar power to Macklin, but he’s much busier and he likes to throw a lot of left hooks. At the same time, Stevens is vulnerable to getting nailed with left hooks. Jess Brinkley hurt Stevens several times in beating him by a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision three years ago.

Golovkin can probably get better opposition than this, but Stevens does give Golovkin a chance to show what he can do against a pure slugger that will come straight at him in the same way that Grzegorz Proksa did last year.

Golovkin will have a lot of opportunities to land his big power shots in close, as Stevens likes to crowd his opponents. He doesn’t fight a lot of body punchers, so it should be interesting to see how Stevens handles getting hit hard to the body by Golovkin.

I suspect he’s going to have problems handling the body attack from Golokvin, not to mention the powerful head shots he’ll be landing as well.
