Cotto-Trout undercard a REALLY weak one

Image: Cotto-Trout undercard a REALLY weak oneBy Dan Ambrose: If you’ll be tuning to watch the Miguel Cotto (37-3, 30 KO’s) vs. Austin Trout (25-0, 14 KO’s) on Showtime on December 1st, you can sleep through the undercard fights because there frankly isn’t much of an undercard to speak of unless you like watching one-sided mismatches.

Here’s what the undercard has:

Salvador Sanchez II (34-4-3, 18 KO’s) vs. Jayson Velez (19-0, 14 KO’s)
Chris Fitzpatrick (15-2, 6 KO’s) vs. Daniel Jacobs (23-1, 20 KO’s)

Sanchez II, 27, is the nephew of former boxing great Salvador Sanchez, who died back in 1982 in a car crash. However, Sanchez II is nothing like his famous uncle and he’s already been beaten a number of times and has had draws that some people felt should have been losses. Velez, 24, is going to destroy this guy in their featherweight bout. It won’t be a fight.

What’s disappointing is that Velez was supposed to have been fighting for a title against IBF featherweight champion Billy Dib. However, according to Dan Rafael, Showtime didn’t like that fight for some reason, but they do like the non-champion Sanchez II. It’s pretty odd because Sanchez II is out of his league in this fight, whereas Dib would have been at least a competitive fight.

In the Jacobs-Fitzpatrick fight, Jacobs will be fighting a guy that has lost two out of his last three fights and has no chance of winning. It’s not supposed to be a competitive match-up, as Jacobs is fighting for only the 2ns time in the past year and half after coming back from a cancer scare.

However, if you’re going to put Jacobs on an important card like the Cotto vs. Trout card, then you got to match him up against someone that can make it competitive because this is about entertaining the boxing fans that will be watching it on Showtime and also the ones paying to see it live at Madison Square Garden in New York, New York.
