McKenna (McJack): The upcoming matchup between WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-0-1, 32 KO’s) and Ring Magazine middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (49-2-2, 28 KO’s) promises to be a good contest with both combatants eager to demonstrate to boxing fans that they are worthy of holding the middleweight crown. The fight will take place on September 15 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.

At a press conference in Mexico City designed to hype the fight Martinez spiced up the event by handing promoter Fernando Beltran and legend Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. a baby bottle telling them to give it to Junior after the fight. Chavez Jr. responded by asking Martinez how he would feel after the baby beat him on September 15.

Chavez has promised that he will train for this fight harder than he has ever trained for any other fight. He believes that his youth and strength will be too much for the thirty seven year old Martinez to deal with.

Julio has made huge progress since taking on five time trainer of the year Freddie Roach. In his last fight he put in an impressive showing against the highly regarded Andy Lee, taking him out in the 7th round. Chavez has shown marked improvement in his last several fights and he figures to continue the improvement.

Martinez is under no illusions and knows that Chavez will enjoy a height and weight advantage in their fight. Sergio figures to enter the ring against Chavez at around 156 pounds. It is rumored that Julio has hydrated back up to nearly 180 pounds in his recent contests.

Martinez is generally ranked as the number three pound for pound fighter in the world and as usual exudes great confidence for the Chavez fight. In his last fight “Maravilla” scored an 11th round stoppage over Mathew Macklin.

Until recently it was known that the handlers of Chavez were reluctant to place their fighter in harms way be agreeing to a contest with the #3 ranked fighter in the world. That has all changed after Julio’s recent showings and they now believe Chavez has a solid chance to defeat Martinez.

The Chavez – Martinez contest will be aired by HBO on Pay Per View (PPV).
