bute6666By Jim Dower: Jean Pascal (29-2-1, 17 KO’s) dominated a timid looking Lucian Bute (31-2, 24 KO’s) on Saturday night to move forward with his career at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada. The final judges scores were 116-112, 118-110, 117-110. Pascal ran out of gas in the final 4 rounds, and he quite fortunate that Bute didn’t throw punches in the first 8 rounds because he could have easily won the fight.

Pascal took a lot of head shots in the 12th round when he went to the ropes and let Bute tee off on him. Pascal appeared hurt, but he was able to turn things around.

After the fight, Bute said he wants a rematch with Pascal. Bute complained that his arms where heavy and he wasn’t able to throw punches like he wanted to.

HBO’s Max Kellerman asked Pascal if he’d like to fight Adonis Stevenson next, but he said he wants to think about his next move. Pascal didn’t act like a fighter who wants to face Stevenson or Sergey Kovalev next. Judging by how Pascal looked tonight, I don’t think he would do well against either Stevenson or Kovalev. I think they both knock him out quickly.

Heavyweight Mike Perez (20-0-1, 12 KO’s) lucked out in getting a 10 round majority draw against the bigger and busier Carlos Takam (29-1-1, 23 KO’s) at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada. The final judges scores were 96-94 for Takam, and 95-95, and 95. Perez appeared to win most of the first 3 rounds.

However, after suffering a cut from a head-butt over his right eye in the 3rd, Perez was badly outworked in the last 7 rounds. Takam did a great job of landing to the body of Perez, and dominating the action. Perez looked small, and dominated by the heavier 255 lb. Takam.

Perez may have received a draw in the fight, but he clearly out the loser because he looked bad in the fight. Based on how Perez looked tonight, it’s extremely doubtful he’d be able to compete against the top fighters in the division. He’s too small and too weak to be fighting against the best heavyweights.
