Broner vs. Rees: Adrien gets an easy one on 2/16

broner777 - CopyBy Scott Gilfoid: This was supposed to have been WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner’s unification bout with WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns, but he didn’t want any, and so Broner has got an easy substitute in former WBA light welterweight champion Gavin Rees to (37-1-1, 18 KO’s) on February 16th at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Broner comes into this fight having annihilated his last five opponents, knocking them all out and not really being challenged by any of them. Even his last opponent Antonio DeMarco, who many boxing fans had previously saw as the beat fighter in the lightweight division, was a mere punching bag for Broner last November.

Broner battered DeMarco for seven rounds before finishing him off in the 8th. The fight should have been halted around the 4th because DeMarco just soaked up needless punishment and didn’t have the power to come back.

DeMarco had done a great job in taking a lot of punishment in stopping Jorge Linares in the 11th round in their fight in October 2011, but this wasn’t Linares that DeMarco was fighting, Broner was completely dominating DeMarco in every sense of the word.

Ree’s loyal British fans believe he’ll win this fight, but the reality is he’s going to lose and lose badly. It’s not even a fight to tell you the truth. Gavin is so far out of his league in this fight that it’s not even funny.

It’s not that Rees isn’t a good fighter, because he’s a pretty decent fighter. It’s that Broner is so much better than him and all the other lightweights in the division that it’s really not even sporting for him to be fighting at this weight right now. He should honestly be moving up in weight so he can tackle better opposition.

Rees has been easily beating his over-matched domestic and Euro level opponents for the past four years. His fans say Rees has only been interested in fighting domestic level opponents because he couldn’t get a title shot until now. Fair enough, but why on earth didn’t Rees step it up and at least fight world class contenders the past four years? I understand him being ignored by the other world champions, but why didn’t Rees fight the guys that he needed to fight in order to get a title shot?

I mean, why didn’t Rees fight the guys that Broner has fought to get title shots, such as Jason Litzau, Eloy Perez and Vincente Escobedo? I think those guys would be much preferable to fighting the guys that Rees fought, like Derry Matthews, John Watson, Ted Bami, Jason Cook, Colin Lynes and Johnny Greaves.
