broner#1 - CopyBy Dan Ambrose: WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner (27-0, 22 KO’s) vs. Marcos Maidana (34-3, 31 KO’s) is a done deal for December 14th, at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. The fight will be pay-per-view on Showtime, and the co-feature bout will be undefeated interim WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman (21-0, 19 KO’s) defending his interim title against Jesus Soto Karass (28-8-3, 18 KO’s).

Rafael said on his twitter: “Richard Schaefer tells me @AdrienBroner vs. @ChinoMaidana is a done deal. Dec. 14 on @SHOsports PPV at the @MGMGrand. Bring it on!!! #boxing.”

Broner-Maidana will be a good fight because it’ll give fans a chance to see if Broner is for real at 147. His fight against Paulie Malignaggi last June showed that Broner might have the power or the size to compete in this division, because Malignaggi was considered by many fans to be the weak link among the 147 lb. champions. Broner barely showed that he was better than Malignaggi, and his power wasn’t impressive.

If nothing else, Maidana has showed that he can definitely punch in the welterweight division. He may not be a great fighter as we’ve seen in his losses to Devon Alexander, Andriy Kotelnik and Amir Khan, but his power makes him a real threat to a lot of the top fighters in the division.

Broner will have to do more than just leaning back with the shoulder roll defense looking to throw single pot shots. Maidana will overwhelm Broner if he tries to fight him like that, and we could see a big upset. It won’t be an upset at this point, because Broner was pretty well exposed by Malignaggi in their fight.

Maidana will definitely test Broner’s chin, and we’ll get a good chance to see if Broner can take a hard shot or two. He’s not going to be able to pick off all of Maidana’s punches by leaning back any trying do keep from getting hit, and and his single power shots might be enough to hurt Maidana. The punches that give Maidana problems are body shots, and Broner has always been more of a head hunter than a body puncher.
