Image: Broner vs. Escobedo: Adrien in easy fight against an overmatched EscobedoBy Scott Gilfoid: Technically, WBO super featherweight champion Adrien Broner (23-0, 19 KO’s) is facing his #1 WBC challenger Vicente Escobedo (26-3, 15 KO’s) on July 21st at the U.S Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio.

However, in the cold reality of the situation Broner is merely fighting a stay busy fight against the badly over-matched Escobedo.

Escobedo isn’t an opponent that will give Broner any problems whatsoever, and he’s also not someone that will give Broner much of a bump up in terms of fame after Broner destroys Escobedo. Like I said, this is a stay busy fight for Broner while he waits for some of the big names to open up for him.

Broner is quickly on his way to becoming the next Floyd Mayweather Jr., and the only thing that separates Broner from Mayweather is a few big named opponents that will get him to that upper level where Broner will be able to fight in pay-per-view events, commanding top dollar.

Mayweather wasn’t a star until he fought Oscar De La Hoya. Once he had that fight, Mayweather become a huge star from that point onward. There’s simply no one in the super featherweight division that will give Broner much of a bump up after he beats them. For Broner to become the huge star that he wants to become, he’ll need to move up to the lightweight division and then after beating one or two of the top fighters at that weight, he needs to move up to the light welterweight and finally the welterweight division.

Once Broner is at welterweight, he’ll be a huge star if his frame can carry an additional 15 pounds. He can’t stick around for too long at super featherweight, lightweight or light welterweight if he wants to get to the promised land of the welterweight division while he’s still young enough to find success. What we don’t want to see is Broner sticking around the super featherweight division for three years, the lightweight division two or three years, and the light welterweight division for another three years. He’ll be too old by then to still find success. He has to do it while he’s still young.

Escobedo will attempt to pressure Broner on July 21st, and that in turn is going to make Broner’s job so much easier because he’ll be able to blast Escobedo out when he leaves himself open while pressuring Broner.
