Broner-Rees: Adrien may have to chase Gavin on Saturday

broner432By Scott Gilfoid: Gavin Rees (37-1-1, 18 KO’s) has reportedly said that he won’t stand in front of WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) on Saturday night to make things easier on him. Rees understand that it’s not the wisest thing to try and trade with the hard hitting Broner for 12 rounds, so he’s going to attempt to box and then look for opportunities to come in and land his big shots.

It’s not exactly new for Broner to be facing an opponent that uses an in and out attack like the one that Rees will be employing on Saturday in Atlantic City, New Jersey. However, what could be a new experience for Broner is for him be dealing with someone that might actually be doing more running than fighting in the 32-year-old Rees. It’s going to be tough for Rees to be able to move for the entire 12 rounds because he’s never been a pure runner.

He does like to fight slick at times like we saw in his fights against Derry Mathews, but for the most part Rees is a little tank of a brawler that prefers to get into the trenches and test his power against his opponents. Against the stronger, faster, younger, heavier and more talented Broner, Rees won’t be able to do that without taking a huge risk of being knocked cold by the 23-year-old. As such, I suspect we’re going to see Broner attacking with Rees literally running once he tastes some of Broner’s power.

Right now, Rees doesn’t know what it’s like to get hit by a puncher like Broner, but once the punches start flying, we’ll see Rees submit to a more passive game plan just for the survival sake. That also depends on whether Rees is going to be stubborn about it. It if he refuses to be smart due to his pride, then he simply be annihilated early on and end up getting blasted out in a real hurry, but I think Rees is going to use his head in this fight by being smart.

Broner has got the legs to chase Rees down if the Welsh fighter but it’s his track shoes on and starts sprinting around the ring to keep from getting hit. Broner is athletic and he’s ready for any possibility that a fighter like Rees can bring in the ring. Broner is a lot like Floyd Mayweather Jr. in that respect. Broner’s able to adapt on the fly to what’s going on in the ring. He doesn’t need to have his trainer analyze what’s going on in the ring for him in between rounds to figure out what’s going on in the ring.

Broner can adapt to whatever fight strategy that Rees is using in the ring at any one time. Rees says he has a plan A, C and C to use for this fight. I suspect Rees is going to need a full alphabet of plans for him to be able to have a chance of winning this fight.
