Lopez-Salido: Juanma slowly building to a future Gamboa fight

By Dan Ambrose: Bob Arum is taking his time in matching up his two stars WBO featherweight champion Juan Manuel Lopez (30-0, 27 KO’s) and WBA/IBF champion Yuriorkis Gamboa (19-0, 15 KO’s) in a fight. Instead of putting them in with each other, Arum is looking to slowly build up the fight for the future. The problem is that neither fighter is taking on anyone good enough to make them anymore popular than they already are.

Donaire already has seen the benefits of the victory, as he’s been pushed to the number #3 spot in the Ring pound-for-pound rankings.

Lopez-Salido: Why is Juanma fighting Gamboa’s sloppy seconds?

By Chris Williams: You have to wonder why WBO featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez (30-0, 27 KO’s) is fighting Yuriorkis Gamboa’s sloppy seconds. Lopez, 27, instead of facing someone that’s currently winning their fights and looking good, is being put in by his promoter Bob Arum with recently beaten Orlando Solido (34-11-2, 22 KO’s) in a fight on April 16th at the Coliseo Roberto Clemente, San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Gamboa vs. Solis on 3/26

By Chris Williams: Rather than stepping up and finally facing Juan Manuel Lopez after all these years, WBA Super World/IBF featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa (19-0, 15 KO’s) will be taking on WBA interim super featherweight champion Jorge Solis (40-2-2, 29 KO’s) on March 26th at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. This isn’t the fight that boxing fans want to see of Gamboa. They want to see him face Lopez. They know he can beat a guy like Solis, because that guy already got spanked by Christobal Cruz in 2009.

Cotto-Martinez, John-Gamboa a possibility for 2011 – News

Image: Cotto-Martinez, John-Gamboa a possibility for 2011 - NewsBy Chris Williams: The negotiations for a fight between World Boxing Council (WBC) middleweight champion Sergio Martinez and WBA junior middleweight Miguel Cotto are still alive, according to examiner.com. However, if the fight does get made, it won’t be until fall next year after Cotto has already fought someone like Antonio Margarito. By that time, it might not be as nearly as an interesting fight as it is now. The reason is simple. If Cotto takes another pounding from Margarito, which is very possible given how Margarito took Cotto apart last time they fought in 2008, Cotto’s stock will drop off in a huge way.

A Critique on Peterson, Rios, Gamboa and Salido

Image: A Critique on Peterson, Rios, Gamboa and SalidoBy Ryan Dunn: Last night’s Boxing After Dark on HBO was nothing if not unusual. Two betting favorites stepped into the ring and ultimately showed more weaknesses than strengths, throwing yet more controversy into the lower weights and the quest for dominance. The fights themselves were plagued with ebbing tides, peculiar fouls and equal turns of heroism and disappointment.

The final judges’ scores were 116-109, 114-109 and 115-109. Gamboa dominated pretty much the entire fight, and had Salido down twice on the canvas with a flurry of big shots in the 12th round.

Gamboa vs. Salido mismatch on Saturday

Image: Gamboa vs. Salido mismatch on SaturdayBy Chris Williams: In what will almost surely be another mismatch bout for Yurirokis Gamboa (18-0, 15 KO’s), he will be putting his World Boxing Association featherweight title on the line in a unification match against IBF featherweight champion Orlando Salido (34-10-2, 22 KO’s) on Saturday night at the Palms Casino Resort, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Gamboa vs. Salido this Saturday night

Image: Gamboa vs. Salido this Saturday nightBy Jim Dower: This Saturday night, World Boxing Association featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa (18-0, 15 KO’s) will be facing IBF featherweight champion Orlando Salido (34-10-2, 22 KO’s) in a unification bout shown on HBO at the Palms Casino Resort, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

This is a somewhat interesting bout but not the fight that boxing fans really want to see Gamboa in. He should take care of the 29-year-old Salido without too many problems unless Gamboa gets reckless and gets caught by one of Salido’s big shots.

However, the fight that fans want to see Gamboa is against either WBO super featherweight champion Juan Manuel Lopez or WBA super bantamweight champion Celestino Caballero.
