Juan Manuel Marquez and Gamboa easily beat Salido, but Lopez fails

By Dan Ambrose: Juan Manuel Lopez (30-1, 27 KO’s) failed miserably in his big test against the tough Mexican Orlando Solido (35-11-2, 23 KO’s) last Saturday night in an 8th round TKO loss in front of Lopez’s shocking fans in Peurto Rico. The loss showed loud and clear that the 27-year-old Lopez isn’t in the same class as fighters like Juan Manuel Marquez and Yuriorkis Gamboa, both of which easily beat Salido in lopsided 12 round decision victories. What does that tell you about Lopez?

Gamboa-Lopez needs to be made

By Tom David Drury: All legends need a powerful rival, (Muhammad Ali had Joe Frazier, Ray Leonard had Marvin Haggler) a competitor who will stimulate and inspire them to perform to the very best of their abilities. The featherweight division is playing host to its own rivalry, (while not on the level of Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather) quietly creating its own allure.

Why doesn’t Pacquiao fight Gamboa at a catchweight?

Image: Why doesn't Pacquiao fight Gamboa at a catchweight?By Chris Williams: If Bob Arum wants to have another one of his in house fights, he needs to consider putting Manny Pacquiao in with a live fighter like Yuriorkis Gamboa instead of an old guy like Shane Mosley or fighters that have had the stuffing pounded out of them before they got to Pacquiao like Antonio Margarito, Miguel Cotto or Joshua Clottey. Gamboa would be a perfect fight for Pacquiao, because we already have Jorge Solis saying that Gamboa punches harder than Pacquiao.

Gamboa destroys Solis: Don’t hold your breath waiting for Gamboa-Lopez

By Scott Gilfoid: Yuriorkis Gamboa made a strong case for himself that he deserves to be considered the best fighter in the featherweight division with his 4th round knockout win over Jorge Solis at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Gamboa started off the fight on the outside but quickly had Solis on the deck in the 2nd round. Gamboa would follow with four more knockdowns before the fight was eventually halted in the 4th round with a dazed looking Solis wondering what hit him. It was like Solis was caught in a tornado and flung around the ring for four rounds.

Solis: Gamboa hits harder than Pacquiao

Image: Solis: Gamboa hits harder than PacquiaoBy Chris Williams: Hard-hitting Mexican Jorge Solis (40-3-2, 29 KO’s) described the experience of fighting WBA World featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa (20-0, 16 KO’s) as “Terrible” after getting knocked down five times on Saturday night and stopped in the 4th round at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Solis, 31, never had a chance as Gamboa was both too fast and too powerful for him to deal with. After the fight, Solis had this to say about Pacquiao’s power in comparison to Gamboa: “Pacquiao doesn’t hit that hard. He throws a lot of punches but he doesn’t hit that hard.”

Arum still letting Gamboa vs. Lopez build momentum before he matches them up

By Jason Kim: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum still feels it’s too soon to match-up his two prized unbeaten featherweight champions Juan Manuel Lopez (30-0, 27 KO’s) and Yuriorkis Gamboa. Arum wants to let the two fighters continue to win fight, build more fans before eventually matching them up at some point in the future. Lopez, 27, holds the WBO featherweight crown and has looked fairly invincible, whereas Gamboa, 29, is the IBF/WBA featherweight champ and has looked a little shaky in some of his fights the past couple of years.

Gamboa vs. Solis this Saturday night, 3/26

By Michael Lieberman: WBA Super World featherweight / IBF featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa (19-0, 15 KO’s) will be taking on super featherweight Jorge Solis (40-2-2, 29 KO’s) this Saturday night on HBO at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. This is yet another fight where boxing fans are expected to watch Gamboa fight someone that they’re likely not too familiar with while they wait for a distant future bout against fellow Top Rank fighter Juan Manuel Lopez. Gamboa-Solis is a decent fight but not the one boxing fans want to see.
