Calzaghe May Fight Once More Against Dawson, Hopkins or Wright

cal765By Dave Lahr: Joe Calzaghe could possibly be looking at fighting one more time against either Bernard Hopkins, Chad Dawson or Winky Wright at the Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium. According to The Telegraph, Calzaghe has “dreams” of fighting at the Millennium Stadium, presumably because he wants to fight in front of a huge audience which would likely be as large as 60,000.

Options For Taylor In 2009

taylor454By Jim Dower: After two consecutive losses to Kelly Pavlik, former WBC/WBO middleweight champion Jermain Taylor (28-2-1, 17 KOs) appears to be once again fighting well having moved up to the super middleweight division where he recently defeated Jeff Lacy by a 12-round unanimous decision in a WBC Super Middleweight Title Eliminator in November. At the new 168 pound weight class, Taylor looked good, not showing signs of endurance problems that have affected him in recent years in fights against Cory Spinks, Kelly Pavlik and Kassim Ouma.

Wright Wants De La Hoya & Pavlik: Is He Dreaming?

wright646462.jpgBy Scott Gilfoid: In perhaps a sign of wishful thinking on his part, former IBF/WBA/WBC/WBO light middleweight champion Ronald “Winky” Wright (51-4-1, 25 KOs) mentioned on Wednesday night’s ESPN boxing telecast that he’s interested in fighting only big fights, and has both Oscar De La Hoya and WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik. The main problem with Wright’s dream fights, however, is that at age 36, he isn’t a media draw like De La Hoya or Pavlik, and isn’t someone that they’d likely be interested in fighting at this point.

Wright hasn’t helped himself, for that matter, by staying away from boxing for the past year after his 12-round unanimous decision loss to Bernard Hopkins in July 2007. It was a close fight, but like many of Wright’s fights, it wasn’t particularly exciting to watch. Even before that, ignoring his win over a come backing Ike Quartey, Wright had fought to a 12-round draw with Jermain Taylor in June 2006. Many people felt that Wright was extremely fortunate to get a draw out of that fight, for he appeared to have lost by the fight by many accounts by at least a round or two. However, all of that could possibly be ignored by fighters like Pavlik and De La Hoya, if Wright had a history of being in exciting fights.

Wright Wants De La Hoya

wright646461.jpgBy Scott Gilfoid: In the latest boxing news, former light middleweight champion Ronald “Winky” Wright (51-4-1, 25 KOs) is reportedly highly interested in a bout with Oscar De La Hoya, whom he feels has been avoiding him for some time. This comes to no surprise to me that De La Hoya, or any other top fighter for that matter, would choose to avoid Wright, because he’s hard to beat even under the best circumstances. Since losing a 12-round unanimous decision to Bernard Hopkins in controversial fashion last July, Wright has been unable to find a top opponent that would be interested in taking him on, likely given his still largely intact boxing skills.

Wright, now 36, is interested mainly in several fighters, ranging from Floyd Mayweather Jr., Kelly Pavlik to De La Hoya. Unfortunately for Wright, each one of them have fights booked up for the remainder of 2008, and in De La Hoya’s case, he may be going after bigger fish, such as Miguel Cotto, after De La Hoya gets through with his next two fights against Steve Forbes and Mayweather. One can’t blame Wright for wanting a bout with anyone of them, especially De La Hoya, because the bout would mean a tremendous payday for Wright, likely well into the millions.

Winky Wright – Is Inactivity Hurting Wright’s Career?

wright3535353.jpgBy Chris Thomas: So far, it’s been six months since former light middleweight & middleweight champion Winky Wright (51-4-1, 25 KOs) last fought, losing a disappointing 12-round unanimous decision to Bernard Hopkins in July 2007 at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada. However, instead of accepting the defeat and moving on, Wright, now 36, has become almost frozen in place, seemingly waiting for another huge mega-fight (you know, the type where each of the fighters are showered with millions of dollars) to come his way. Unfortunately for Wright, it isn’t happening and he seem none to pleased about it. Rather than starting over, perhaps taking a lesser fighter, Wright still waits for the one big fight to come knocking. As of now, he has no fights planned, and has already wasted six months of his career waiting. In an interview with ESPN’s writer Eric Raskin, Wright had this to say about taking on lesser quality fighters:

“Why should I go fight these lesser guys when I know I’m above them?…They want me to fight Kessler. Why do I need to fight these dudes? I’m at the top. Arthur Abraham and people like that, I have no interest in them. For what?”

Winky Wright: Why Hasn’t He Received The Fame Like Other Boxers?

wright64646.jpgDuring this past week with all the news on the old timers bout between Felix Trinidad and Roy Jones, I took another look at Trinidad’s bout with Winky Wright (51-4-1, 25 KOs), which turned out to be a lopsided 12-round unanimous decision victory for Wright in May 2005. I wondered why, a fighter with as much talent as the 36 year-old Wright, didn’t get the type of fame and popularity as other fighters like Oscar De La Hoya, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Bernard Hopkins get. Since turning professional in 1990, Wright has only been beaten four times, yet of the four, three of the losses – to Hopkins, Fernando Vargas and Harry Simon – have been highly controversial.

In point of fact, I only consider Wright’s loss to World Boxing Association light middleweight champion Julio Cesar Vasquez in August 1994, as being Wright’s only legitimate loss. In that fight, Wright dominated Vazquez for most of the fight before tiring out in the later rounds, and subsequently getting knocked down four times en route to losing a 12-round decision.
