Cleverly facing big puncher Uzelkov on October 27th

By Sean McDaniel: WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (24-0, 11 KO’s) has had little luck in getting big named fighters like Bernard Hopkins to step up to fight him. That was a fight that the 25-year-old Cleverly was hoping he could get in 2012, but it’s not going to be happening. Instead of fighting Hopkins this year, Cleverly has had to settle for a fight with Tommy Karpency, who Cleverly easily beat last February. Cleverly now will be fighting the hard hitting #7 WBO Vyacheslav Uzelkov (27-2, 16 KO’s) on October 27th at the Motorpoint Arena, Cardiff, Wales, UK.

Bellew and Froch turned down Cleverly fight, says Warren

Image: Bellew and Froch turned down Cleverly fight, says WarrenBy William Mackay: According to promoter Frank Warren, he attempted to get both Tony Bellew and Carl Froch for a fight against WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (24-0, 11 KO’s), but both guys turned the fight down. Cleverly instead will be facing #9 WBO Vyacheslav Uzelkov (27-2, 16 KO’s) on October 27th at the Motorpoint Arena, Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom.

Warren told thesun.co.uk “A huge purse was put to Froch to move up a weight division – which he turned down – and Bellew rejected the offer of a rematch. We had [Bernard] Hopkins lined up and then he pulled out, while [WBA light heavyweight champion Beibut] Shumenov didn’t want to come over [to the UK].”

Cleverly to defend WBO title against Uzelkov on October 27th

Image: Cleverly to defend WBO title against Uzelkov on October 27thBy Scott Gilfoid: WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (24-0, 11 KO’s) will be defending his title on October 27th against Ukraine’s Vyacheslav Uzelkov (27-2, 16 KO’s) at the Motorpoint Arena, Cardiff, Wales, UK. This should be one of Cleverly’s easier fights, as 33-year-old Uzelkov has already exposed in losses to Beibut Shumenov and Eduard Gutknecht in the past two years.

#9 WBO, Uzelkov basically has little more than a puncher’s chance of winning this fight at beat. He’s got decent power, but he doesn’t throw too many combinations. It’s either a big right hand or nothing from Uzelkov. His stamina is also a problem area for him, as we saw in his fights agaisnt Gutknecht and Shumenov where he gassed out after six rounds and was pretty much working on fumes the rest of the fight.
