By Dan Ambrose: A fight between former welterweight world champions Victor Ortiz and Devon Alexander is being talked about for early next year in February 2018, according to Fighthype. This is a must win for both fighters, as they’ve seen their once promising careers disintegrate in recent years. Ortiz-Alexander would have been a fun fight 6 years ago when the 2 guys were major players at 147. At this point, it’s not as interesting. It’s more of a Danny Garcia vs. Brandon Rios type of business fight involving fading fighters without a place for them at the top.

Brandon Rios vs. Victor Ortiz in February

rios0000

By Dan Ambrose: Struggling former world champions Brandon Rios (33-3-1, 24 KOs) and Victor Ortiz (31-6-2, 24 KOs) will be facing each other on February 4 at a still to be determined venue in Los Angeles, California. A lot of boxing fans see the 30-year-old Rios and Ortiz as shot fighters.

This should be a good fight with a possible sudden ending. It might bring decent ratings. However, in the big scheme of thing, it doesn’t mean the winner will go anything spectacular. Knowing how boxing is run, I wouldn’t be surprised if the winner of the Rios-Ortiz fight gets an undeserved title shot against one of the welterweight world champions.

Brandon Rios wants Victor Ortiz fight

rios0000

By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA lightweight champion Brandon Rios (33-3-1, 24 KOs) says he’d like to fight Victor Ortiz (31-6-2, 24 KOs), because he says he’s been talking mess about him. Rios, 30, wants to pay him back by beating him in the ring. Ortiz was last seen in April in getting stopped in the 4th round by Andre Berto at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

It would be good to see Ortiz return to the ring to fight Rios, because both fighters’ careers are presently on the rocks right now. An overweight 170 pound Rios was stopped in the 9th round by Tim Bradley last November in Las Vegas, Nevada. Bradley dropped Rios twice with hard body shots in that round to get the stoppage.

Berto says sparring with Ward helped him with Ortiz fight

Image: Berto says sparring with Ward helped him with Ortiz fightBy Allan Fox: Andre Berto (31-4, 24 KOs) tuned his career around last Saturday night with a fourth round knockout win over his old nemesis Victor Ortiz (31-6-2, 24 KOs) in their rematch at the DC Armory in Washington, DC.

A loss for Berto in this fight would have removed any chance of him getting a crack at WBC 147lb world champion Danny Garcia, and it might have did his career in. The improvement that Berto made in his skills came from his hard work in sparring with former WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward, who shares the same trainer as him in Virgil Hunter out of Hayward, California.
