Haye: Eubank Jr. has a chance of beating Golovkin

Image: Haye: Eubank Jr. has a chance of beating Golovkin

By Jeff Aranow: David Haye sees Chris Eubank Jr. as the only fighter that has the chance of beating IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) if the two of them ever meet each other during their careers. Eubank Jr. already passed on the option of fighting Golovkin last year, and I’m not sure whether he’ll get a second chance unless he can become a big star.

Right now, it would seem that Golovkin is cool to the idea of him facing Eubank Jr. Golovkin already is having a devil of a time just trying to get a fight against Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. He doesn’t need a second headache of trying to get a fight against Eubank Jr., and having no luck.

By Dan Ambrose: WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (22-2-2, 13 KOs) called out both Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Gennady “GGG” Golovkin last night following his 12 round unanimous decision victory over Vanes “The Nightmare” Martirosyan (36-2-1, 21 KOs) at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

Lara, 33, lost to Canelo in 2014 by a disputed 12 round split decision, and he’s been calling for a rematch with him ever since. Lara has yet to fight IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Golovkin, but he’s willing to go up to 160 to fight him.

Lara defeats Martirosyan in rematch

lara-charlo (18)

By Jim Dower: WBA World junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (23-2-2, 13 KOs) held onto his title on Saturday night in defeating #15 WBC fringe contender Vanes Martirosyan (36-3-1, 21 KOs) by a close 12 round unanimous decision at the Vegas Events Center (DLVEC) in Las Vegas. The judges scored the fight 115-112, 116-111, 116-111.

Martirosyan was wrongly docked a point for throwing a punch on the belt-line in the 11th round. Referee Vic Drakulitch blew the call by counting it as a low blow. It’s unfortunate that a bad call should come in a crucial round like that, but that’s boxing. The point deduction helped Lara, was starting to struggle at the time.

Lara wants GGG after Martirosyan fight

Image: Lara wants GGG after Martirosyan fightBy Dan Ambrose: IBO/WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy “The American Dream” Lara (22-2-2, 13 KOs) has already targeted two names for his next fight after he deals with #15 WBA fringe contender Vanes Martirosyan (36-2-1, 21 KOs) in their rematch this Saturday night on Showtime Championship Boxing at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Lara, 33, says he wants either IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin or former two division world champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez next. Lara says he prefers a fight against GGG. He doesn’t say why, but it could that Canelo’s star power has diminished due to him giving up his WBC middleweight title on Wednesday of this week rather than keeping the belt for the Golovkin fight.

Lara-Martirosyan possible for 5/21, with Jermall Charlo vs. Trout

1(Credit: Josh Jordan/Premier Boxing Champions) By Jeff Aranow: An interesting fight card is being planned for May 21 on Showtime Boxing involving three big fights in the 154lb division. IBF junior middleweight champion Jermall Charlo (23-0, 18 KOs) will be defending his title against #9 IBF Austin Trout (30-2, 17 KOs), WBA World junior middleweight Erislandy Lara (22-2-2, 13 KOs) will be facing #4 WBC, #7 WBO Vanes Martirosyan (36-2-1, 21 KOs) in a rematch, and #1 WBC 154lb contender Jermell Charlo (27-0, 12 KOs) will be battling #2 WBC John Jackson (20-2, 15 KOs) in a fight for the vacant WBC junior middleweight title.

The triple-header, if it takes place, will be staged in Houston, Texas. This will be a great card if it comes off. It’s a good ideal to package the three junior middleweight contests together on the same card because it helps set up fights between them in the future almost in a Super Six tournament type of situation.
