Deontay Wilder to fight on September 26th, Arreola and Tony Thompson possibilities

wilder5555(Photo credit: Sumio Yamada) By Scott Gilfoid: WBC #1 mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin will have to wait for his title shot against WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (34-0, 33 KOs) a little while longer, as Wilder will be taking a voluntary defense on September 26th in California, Las Vegas or Biloxi, Mississippi, according to CBS Sports. The leading candidates for Wilder’s next title defense is Tony Thompson (40-5, 27 KOs) and Chris Arreola (36-4, 31 KOs).

Those are two good solid fringe contenders that are capable of beating a lot of the top heavyweights in the division on a good day. The Povetkin fight will likely take place in 2016 for Wilder, although the negotiations will start by October.

After that Hearn is looking to move onto European level with some of the experienced names that have a solid background with them from beating some previous big names.

Tony Thompson wants to beat Joshua, then Deontay Wilder

thompson3By Scott Gilfoid: Before he gets a hoped for third world title fight against IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, #14 WBC Tony Thompson (40-5, 27 KOs) wants to beat Olympic medalists Anthony Joshua (10-0, 10 KOs) of Britain, and WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (33-0, 32 KOs) in back to back fights.

Thompson thinks Joshua still needs more schooling and that’s why he wants to face him first before he gets to Wilder and Klitschko. Thompson is impressed with the 6’6” Joshua’s skills, and he sees a bright future ahead of the heavily muscled Brit.

The 6’5” Thompson feels that Joshua isn’t ready for the lesson he’s going to give him.

Tony Thompson stops Odlanier Solis in 9th round

oner4By Jim Dower: 43-year-old former two time world title challenger Tony Thompson (40-5, 27 KOs) stopped a badly out of shape 272 pound Odlanier Solis (20-3, 13 KOs) on Friday night in stopping him in the 9th round in front of a sparse crowd at the Gloria Sports Arena, Gloria Hotels and Resorts, Antalya, Turkey.

A balding and flabby looking 34-year-old Solis failed to come out for the 9th round. Solis didn’t look hurt in between the 8th and 9th rounds at the time of the stoppage. He just looked tired and grossly overweight.

Solis looked like he hadn’t trained at all for the fight, as he had rolls of fat on his midsection. The 272 matches the career-high he weighed for his fight against Konstantin Airich in May of 2012. That was when Solis came off of a 14 month layoff following a knee injury he suffered in getting blown out in one round by former WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko in March of 2011.

Odlanier Solis vs. Tony Thompson 2 in the works for October

thompson2By Dan Ambrose: In a must win bout for both fighters, #13 WBC heavyweight fringe contender Odlanier Solis (20-2, 13 KOs) and 42-year-old #13 WBO Tony Thompson (39-5, 26 KOs) will be facing each other in October in a rematch.

The two fighters faced each other last March with Thompson pounding out a 12 split decision at the Atatürk Spor Salonu, Tekirdag, Turkey. Thompson clearly won the fight and deserved a unanimous decision rather than a split decision. He simply outworked the chunky 257 pound Solis.

The exact date and venue of the Solis-Thompson II fight is still being worked out at this time, but it wouldn’t be surprising if it winds up in Turkey again.
The winner of the rematch between the two fighters will keep their faint hopes for a world title shot in the future if they keep winning or if they get picked out by one of the champions in a voluntary defense, which isn’t too likely.

Tony Thompson volunteers to fight Tyson Fury this Saturday

thompson3By Scott Gilfoid: Former two-time world title challenger Tony Thompson (39-5, 26 KOs) has volunteered to step in and replace the injured Dereck Chisora to fight Tyson Fury (22-0, 16 KOs) this Saturday night at the Phones 4 U Arena in Manchester, UK.

Chisora suffered a fractured hand on his final day of sparring to get ready for the Fury rematch. Obviously it’s just a bad luck thing for the 30-year-old Chisora, but doesn’t change the fact that Fury has wasted months of training and is without a payday fight on Saturday.

Thompson said on his twitter “@Tyson_Fury I’LL FIGHT YOU THIS SATURDAY, FOOL!”

The question would Fury and his promoter be interested in taking the fight against the 42-year-old, 6’5” Thompson? We saw that Thompson did to another highly hyped heavyweight in David Price last year in knocking him out twice, putting his career on skid row. Could it be Fury’s turn to be exposed by the southpaw Thompson?

Takam defeats Tony Thompson, captures WBC Silver heavyweight title

takam77By Allan Fox: Former two time world title challenger Tony Thompson (39-5, 26 KO’s) took a beating in getting badly outworked by #11 WBC Carlos Takam (30-1-1, 23 KO’s) in losing by a 12 round unanimous decision on Friday night at the Palais des Sport Marcel Cerdan, Levallois-Perret, Hauts-de-Seine, France.

The judges scored it 117-111, 119-109, and 117-111, all in favor of the 33-year-old Takam. The win gives Takam the vacant WBC Silver heavyweight title, and it’ll no doubt help push him up the rankings.

The 6’5” Thompson had problems keeping the shorter 6’2 ½” Takam off of him in every round, as Takam did an excellent job of staying close to Thompson each time he would attempt to get punching room to let his shots go.

Tony Thompson vs. Carlos Takam on June 6th in France

thompson211By Allan Fox: #6 IBF, #6 WBA heavyweight contender Tony Thompson (39-4, 26 KO’s) will be taking a tough fight against #13 WBC Carlos Takam (29-1-1, 23 KO’s) on June 6th in a scheduled 12 bound bout at the Palais des Sport Marcel Cerdan, Levallois-Perret, Hauts-de-Seine, France. The 42-year-old Thompson will be fighting in front of the France-based Takam’s home fans in this fight, and Thompson’s going to need to put in the kind of performance that we saw from him in his last performance against Odlanier Solis last month for Thompson to ensure he gets the win.

Thompson needs a win in this fight to keep alive his hopes of getting a world title shot in 2015. He’s twice fought heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko for world titles, but both efforts led to knockout losses for Thompson in 2008 and 2012. Thompson would love to get one more shot at Wladimir for his IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight titles.

Fury says he wants to wait on his July 26th WBO heavyweight title eliminator bout against Dereck Chisora (20-4, 13 KO’s), and then face IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko if Fury is able to get past Chisora.
