Bellew vs. Chilemba possible for March 30th in Liverpool

bellew5434By Scott Gilfoid: #3 WBC light heavyweight contender Tony Bellew (19-1, 12 KO’s) could be on the verge of facing his first real quality opponent in #5 WBC Isaac Chilemba (30-1-1, 9 KO’s) on March 30th at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK. Bellew, 30, is hoping to get a title shot against WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson in 2013, that’s not likely to happen because he’s not ranked high enough.

Bellew needs another big win or two to get him to the #1 mandatory position and it starts possibly with the talented 25-year-old Chilemba from Johannesburg, South Africa. Chilema is a tough fighter and I can’t see Bellew getting past this guy unless he’s able to score a knockout.

Tony Bellew back in action on March 3rd in Liverpool, England

bellew434By Scott Gilfoid: #3 WBC, #14 IBF light heavyweight contender Tony Bellew (19-1, 12 KO’s) will be fighting on March 3rd against an opponent still to be determined at the Echo Arena, in Liverpool, United Kingdom. Bellew, 30, is hoping to get a title shot against WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson in 2013. Bellew got a huge boost in the World Boxing Council rankings when he beat little known contender Roberto Feliciano Bolonti by a 12 round unanimous decision last month to capture the WBC Silver light heavyweight title.

I’d never seen or heard of Bolonti before but after seeing him fight; I now know why I never heard of the guy. He looked absolutely terrible and I have no clue why the WBC had this ranked in their top 10.

Bellew’s dream of fighting Dawson will be delayed

Image: Bellew's dream of fighting Dawson will be delayedBy Scott Gilfoid: Tony Bellew (19-1, 12 KO’s0 easily beat #5 WBC Roberto Bolonti (30-2, 19 KO’s) by a two knockdown 12 round unanimous decision last Saturday night in Nottingham to win the WBC Silver light heavyweight title, but the win came at a heavy price for the the soon to be 30-year-old Bellew, as he suffered a bad cut on his right eyebrow in the 3rd round.

The cut is going to keep Bellew out of action until at least April. As bad as that cut was I’d be surprised if Bellew can come back before May and if he does rush himself back the cut will likely reopen as soon as it gets hit solidly. It might not matter if Bellew faces another weak opponent without much of a chance to compete with him. But if plans on facing someone good like Eduard Gutknecht, Denis Grachev, or Ismayl Sillakh, Bellew is going to have some problems.

Image: Broner, Froch, Bellew, Banks: What did we learn?By Rusty Nate: Well after a wonderful weekend of fights what did we learn from it all? We’ll start at the bottom and work up……

Bellew Vs Bolonti – UD

I think this was an amazing fight. Not because it was full of knock downs or because they both went to out and out war but because it showed us a HUGE amount about the character of Tony Bellew.

Froch obliterates Mack; Bellew dominates Bolonti

Image: Froch obliterates Mack; Bellew dominates BolontiBy Jim Dower: IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (30-2, 22 KO’s) came out on top tonight in stopping challenger Yusaf Mack (31-5-2, 17 KO’s) in the 3rd round in Nottingham, UK.

Froch hit Mack with three hard punches with two of them being debilitating body blows that sent Mack down on all fours on the canvas. He tried to throw a hard left hook just before collapsing on the canvas but Froch easily leaned back to avoid the shot.

Mack never showed any indication that wanted to get back up and the fight was then stopped at at the 2:30 mark.

Bellew wants Dawson next after Bolonti

Image: Bellew wants Dawson next after BolontiBy Scott Gilfoid: If Tony Bellew (18-1, 12 KO’s) can get past his opponent tonight Roberto Bolonti (30-1, 19 KO’s) in their fight for the vacant WBC Silver light heavyweight title in Nottingham, Bellew wants to go after a fight against WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson (31-2, 17 KO’s). Bellew thinks he knows how to beat Dawson after watching Andre Ward take him apart last September.

Bellew said to Sky Sports Ringside “I still feel Chad Dawson is the best light heavyweight in the world, even with the Andre Ward defeat. But I want to force him into fighting me because I don’t believe that he will choose me. I’ve seen the blueprint in how to beat him. I want to get into the ring with Chad Dawson. I believe I can beat Chad Dawson.”

Weigh-in: Froch vs. Mack, Bellew vs. Bolonti

Image: Weigh-in: Froch vs. Mack, Bellew vs. BolontiBy Scott Gilfoid: IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (29-2, 21 KO’s) easily made weight today in his weigh-in with American Yusaf Mack (31-4-2, 17 KO’s) for their fight on Saturday night in Nottingham, UK. Froch, 35, came in at a half pound under the limit at 167 ½ lbs, whereas the 32-year-old Mack weighed in right on the limit of 168 lbs

Mack was picked out from the light heavyweight division for this fight, meaning he had to boil down from 175 to make weight. Some boxing fans feel that this was done to get an edge for Froch, because this could potentially be a lot easier fight for him than it would if Froch fought an actual contender from the super middleweight class that is used to fighting at this weight.

Froch-Mack, Bellew-Bolonti, Broner-DeMarco – Where does the upset come?

Image: Froch-Mack, Bellew-Bolonti, Broner-DeMarco - Where does the upset come?By Rusty Nate: So as the weekend approaches and the buzz of the Saturday night fights from the UK and the US start to boil over I thought I would have a quick little write up on my thoughts……

From the UK…

Carl Froch (29-2-0) vs. Yusaf Mack (31-4-2)

I don’t see this as being a hugely exciting fight like the Froch vs. Bute encounter. To be fair to them though the promoters & fighters have managed to do a wonderful job of building the event set to take place in Nottingham.

Bellew dumps on Cleverly for fighting Hawk

Image: Bellew dumps on Cleverly for fighting HawkBy Scott Gilfoid: Tony Bellew (18-1, 12 KO’s) was disappointed and amused at seeing who WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (25-0, 12 KO’s) ended up fighting last Saturday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. Instead of taking on an actual contender ranked in the top 15, Cleverly ended up fighting a guy named Shawn Hawk (23-3-1, 17 KO’s) in what turned out to be a really poor fight for Cleverly, Hawk and for the boxing fans that had to sit through it.

Bellew said to Sky Sports “I was offered Shawn Hawk, he was No 5 on the opponents we had for the fight and Roberto Bolonti was the highest possible ranked opponent I could have fought. It’s a joke of a fight [Cleverly-Hawk] in my opinion and where are you going with fights like that? You are supposed to be a world champion.”
