Stevenson looking past Bellew; wants Bute-Pascal winner

stevenson5By Scott Gilfoid: Tony Bellew (20-1-1, 12 KO’s) may be the next guy to be facing WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson (22-1, 19 KO’s) in early 2014, but Stevenson isn’t thinking too much about the Bellew fight.

Instead, Stevenson is highly interested in the January 18th fight between fellow Canadian based fighters Lucian Bute (31-1, 24 KO’s) and Jean Pascal (28-2-1, 17 KO’s) at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada.

That’s the much bigger fight for Stevenson then a simple title defense against Bellew, who most casual Canadian fans have never even heard of.

Bellew: I’m coming to take Adonis Stevenson’s titles

stevenson54By Scott Gilfoid: #1 WBO, Tony Bellew (20-1-1, 12 KO’s) got a chance to witness the savage beating that WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson (22-1, 19 KO’s) gave to Tavoris Cloud (24-2, 19 KO’s) last night in halting him after the 7th round at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada.

Instead of being scared off, Bellew is sounding like he’s even more confident of his chances of beating the 36-year-old Stevenson. It’s difficult to imagine Bellew doing any better than Cloud did, though, because Bellew just struggled through two fights against Isaac Chilemba.

Bellew had major problems with Chilemba’s hand speed, and it wasn’t until their second fight that Bellew was able to gain a slight advantage by holding and clinching Chilemba all night.

Liverpool – Home of UK Boxing

bellew5By Rachel Aylett: With the recent successes of the Smith brothers, I thought it would be good to have a look at the best fighters currently plying their trade out of Liverpool, currently the hub of boxing in the UK. I have categorized them into five groups, as you will see below.

World level

Tony Bellew, 20-1-1 (12). In some ways Bellew is lucky in that he fights in the light-heavyweight division, one of the weakest in boxing. This is a double-edged sword however as it also means there are fewer opportunities to secure big purses. Bellew has been promised a shot at the winner of Saturday night’s WBC title fight between fearsome puncher Adonis Stevenson and former IBF champion Tavoris Cloud.

Adonis Stevenson vs. Tavoris Cloud set for September 28th; Bellew faces winner

cloud4323By Scott Gilfoid: #1 WBC Tony Bellew will be sitting by waiting to find out the winner of the September 28th fight between WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson (21-1, 18 KO’s) and former IBF light heavyweight champion Tavoris Cloud (24-1, 19 KO’s) at the Bell Centre, in Montreal, Canada.

The winner of this fight will have to face Bellew rather than look for a more interesting bout, as Bellew is the mandatory challenger, and he’s next in line to face the winner.

Contracts for the Cloud-Stevenson fight are signed, and the only thing that needs to happen now is for them to go through their training camps without suffering injuries, and then meet up next month on September 28th in Canada.

Bellew: Cleverly’s team selected Kovalev because they see him as a hype job

kovalev22By Scott Gilfoid: Light heavyweight contender Tony Bellew believes the sole reason that WBO light heavyweight Nathan Cleverly’s team selected the hard hitting Sergey Kovalev (21-0-1, 19 KO’s) to fight in an optional defense is because they see him as a flawed fighter that Cleverly can get by. Bellew doesn’t think Cleverly would be matched up with Kovalev if he were a Gennady Golovkin type of fighter.

Bellew said on his twitter “This fight wouldn’t be happening if he [Kovalev] was anything like Golovkin, believe me. They see he’d just a puncher and they know they’ll outwork him. Just remember this is a voluntary, not a mandatory. There is a reason they chose this guy. They see him as a hype job, simple. Golovkin = P4p. Kovalev = Strong/limited, There is NO comparison…I’m merely stating facts.”

Bellew: I’ll beat Adonis Stevenson in style; he won’t get near me

bellew2By Scott Gilfoid: Britain’s Tony Bellew’s close 12 round decision win over Isaac Chilemba last May seems to have gone to his head, because Bellew is now talking nonsense about how he’s going to easily beat the talented WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson (21-1, 18 KO’s) if and when the two fighters meet up on November 30th in Montreal, Canada.

It’s still not a dead certainty that it’ll be Stevenson that Bellew (20-1-1, 12 KO’s) will be facing on that date, because it could be former IBF light heavyweight champion Tavoris Cloud if he gets past Stevenson in their fight in September. But Bellew will be facing one of those two, and either one is going to be a nightmare for the Liverpool fighter.

Bellew to face Stevenson-Cloud winner in November

bellew22By Scott Gilfoid: #1 WBC, Tony Bellew (20-1, 12 KO’s) is now locked in to face the winner of the September fight between WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson and Tavoris Cloud, according to the BBC Sport. Bellew will fight the winner of that bout possibly on November 30th.

Bellew doesn’t match up well at all with Stevenson, so I imagine he’s hoping that Cloud is the guy he’s going to be facing in November because Stevenson would be a nightmare opponent for him.

Barker, Bellew, Quigg: Future world champions

barker56433By JK James: Anyone who follows British boxing and in particular boxing on Sky Sports are aware that Eddie Hearn has all but secured three of his fighters world title shots. Darren Barker (25-1-0,16ko’s) has a an upcoming shot at Daniel Geale (29-1-0,15ko’s) for the IBF middleweight title, Adonis Stevenson (21-1-0,18ko’s) has reportedly been ordered to defend his WBC light heavyweight title against mandatory challenger Tony Bellew (20-1-1,12ko’s) and Scott Quigg (26-0-1,19ko’s) has been ordered to fight for the vacant WBA super bantamweight title against Yoandri Salinas(20-0-1,13ko’s).

In my opinion all three of these upcoming fights are legitimate opportunities for Matchroom fighters to win world title’s unlike the efforts of Gavin Rees in his hearty effort against Adrien Broner and the instantly forgettable fight between Lee Purdy and Devon Alexander. Here I will look at each fighters credentials in there attempt to win there maiden world championships.

Hearn: Adonis Stevenson must fight Tony Bellew next; the WBC confirms this

bellew64By Scott Gilfoid: WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson (21-1, 18 KO’s) MUST fight his #1 WBC mandatory challenger Tony Bellew (20-1, 12 KO’s) next, says Bellew’s promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport.

Hearn wrote to the World Boxing Council to get confirmation that Bellew should be the next opponent for Stevenson, and the WBC wrote back and confirmed this, says Hearn. This means that Stevenson is in a position where he has to face Bellew next or else he’ll be in the position where the WBC could strip him of his title.

Bellew: I’m going to shock Adonis Stevenson

bellew46By Scott Gilfoid: Tony Bellew (20-1-1, 12 KO’s) thinks he’s got newly crowned WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson (21-1, 18 KO’s) all figured out in terms of his fighting style and he believes he’s going to shock Stevenson and the world by beating him when the two fight. Stevenson ripped the WBC title away from Chad Dawson last Saturday in destroying him by a 1st round knockout in Montreal, Canada. Bellew for some reason thinks he’s the kryptonite to defeat “Superman” Adonis.

Bellew said to Sky Sports “You’ve got to use your brain. I’ll go about it in a way that will probably shock people and shock him because I’ve studied him…Adonis Stevenson is wild and he gives you opportunities.”
