Dillian Whyte beats Anthony Joshua just by showing up, says Hearns

whyte555By Scott Gilfoid: Former world champion Thomas “Hit Man” Hearns is saying that all unbeaten heavyweight Dillian Whyte (16-0, 13 KOs) needs to do in order to beat the highly hyped Anthony Joshua (14-0, 14 KOs) next month is for him to just show up for their December 12th fight, because Whyte already has Joshua beaten due to his previous win over him from 2009. Whyte knocked Joshua down in that fight, and got the better of him throughout the fight with his powerful left hook. Hearns thinks that the loss bothers the 6’6” Joshua.

“Tommy says that all I’ve got to do to beat Anthony is show up – because I’ve got him mentally already,” Whyte said via the mirror.co.uk. “Thomas Hearns actually said that to me, that all I’ve got to do is show up and fight him. He said, ‘You’ve got him mentally, you’ve fought him and beaten him’.”

hagler44468By Gav Duthie: Promoter Bob Arum labelled the 1985 super-fight between Marvelous Marvin Hagler 60-2-2 (50) and Thomas ‘The Hitman’ Hearns 40-1 (34) simply ‘The War’. He certainly wasn’t wrong, what transpired was arguably the greatest 8 minutes in boxing history.

This fight had its 30 year anniversary just last week in an era that many fans call the best ever. Hagler and Hearns made up one half of the fabulous four alongside ‘Sugar’ Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran.

Pipino Cuevas vs. Thomas Hearns battled for the WBA Welterweight Championship of the World

hearns33544By Gerardo Granados: On August 2 of 1980 the reigning WBA welterweight champion Jose Pipino Cuevas defended his title for the twelve time, against a young lion named Thomas Hearns the “Motor City Cobra” for whom this was the first title bout of his legendary boxing career.

I was a young lad by the time, but I remember that my uncles were very disappointed when Hearns crushed Cuevas with vicious rights to win the fight in the second round.

On one corner Pipino Cuevas, who was the Champion and had a reputation for being a heavy puncher, having won his last twelve fights eleven by knockout. On the other corner the Contender Thomas Hearns who had 28 wins no losses with 26 knockouts by the time they fought.

Fringe contenders to Wladimir Klitschko’s titles: The Ignored Contenders

Image: Fringe contenders to Wladimir Klitschko's titles: The Ignored Contenders2012 was quite a busy year for Wladimir Klitschko. The quality of the opposition he faced was  poor as  Jean Marc Mormeck, Tony Thompson and Mariusz Wach are hardly considered exciting match ups. Amongst the supposed mismatches the Polish warrior Mariusz Wach was the sole surprise, in a lopsided 12 round beating he showed a granite chin and seemingly unbreakable resolve.  He could be the fighter to watch for 2013.

Klitschko also lost a great friend and mentor in Emmanuel Steward. Nothing I can say could begin to capture the magic behind this man, and his effect on Wladimir,Lewis and Hearns in the past. The loss of a mentor is painful, although this was shown to be a motivator for Wladimir and also Jonathan Banks who won a surprise 2nd round KO against American prospect Seth Mitchell.

Image: Leonard: Me and Hearns would KO Pacquiao and MayweatherBy Allan Fox: Boxing great “Sugar” Ray Leonard has a lot of respect for both Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao as fighters. However, he thinks they both would have been in deep, deep water had they been around to face him in his prime as well as Tommy “Hitman” Hearns. Leonard thinks he and Hearns would KO both Mayweather and Pacquiao.

Who do you pick? Hearns vs. Mayweather

Image: Who do you pick? Hearns vs. MayweatherBy Gerardo Granados: Fighting at welterweight, both fighters agree to have their blood examined at the weight in so none would take PEDS before this fight. Both agreed the purse split, size of the globes, judges, and also it’s permitted the use of xylocaine. And just in case you might forget Roberto Duran was a lightweight and fought Hearns.

Badge of honour- Thomas Hearns’ body of work

hearns22428By Klaas Mabetlela: It is natural that people will always think the boxers around them are greater than the yester-years’ boxers and these debates will always be there for as long as the sport of boxing exists. Manny Pacquiao’s devastating performances have revived debates on all-time greats of the fistic arena.

I am looking at the career of Thomas Hearns to help fans to calm a bit, take a backward step and dig deeper when the issue of all time greats is debated.
