Boxers living in the shadows of their fathers

chavez01By Gav Duthie: Shane Mosley Jnr suffered his first professional defeat in only his third fight last night. After winning the first bouts by stoppage he was far from impressive against a similarly inexperienced opponent finding himself on the wrong end of a split decision. It makes it quite difficult to believe Mosley Snr when he says his son will be world champion because boxing is in his blood. So who are the more successful boxing sons in the sport today?

Criteria

There is a lot of families where boxing is in the blood. At present the Alvarez family spear headed by Canelo have a few solid contenders as do the Morales (Erik) family.

A Shame for Sugar Shane Mosley

mundine59274By @BoxingMuse: Three weight champion Shane Mosley looked a shell of his former self during his performance in Sydney, Australia against Anthony Mundine. The fight ended before the start of 7th round with the fight doctor and referee in agreement that due to Mosley suffering back spasms the bout should be stopped. Mundine who is a two-weight world titlist (WBA & IBO titles) himself now has a TKO win over the American legend.

Mosley in his prime, which can be estimated over ten years ago, approximately around the victories over De La Hoya was an extremely talented fighter. Shane may well be remembered as one of the best lightweights of all time and a certain hall of famer. It is sad to say we haven’t seen vintage Mosley since his iconic victory over boxing’s bad boy Antonio Margarito.

Mundine defeats Mosley after back injury for Shane

mundine53By Jim Dower: In a disappointing finish, 42-year-old Shane Mosley (47-9-1, 39 KO’s) was unable to continue fighting after the 6th round due to back spasms in his fight against 38-year-old Anthony Mundine (45-5, 27 KO’s) to win the vacant WBA International light middleweight title at the Allphones Arena, Olympic Park, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

The crowd booed when the fight was halted, and it’s hard to blame them.

Mundine says he wants a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr., but you have to wonder if that’s the case then why was he fighting 42-year-old Mosley instead of a top welterweight like Keith Thurman? Mundine seems to be going about trying to get a fight against Mayweather all backwards.

When a Fighter becomes just an Opponent in a fading career

mosley43443By Allen Hmiel: Sure every boxer aspires to be a champion and have that beautiful belt and all the accolades and glory and fame that come with the title. The opportunity to make the big dollars and reap the benefits and notoriety that is associated with being called a Boxing Champion is usually the driving force for every young fighter entering the boxing profession. But after losing fights and getting old some fighters just become opponents with no real chance of ever getting that Championship belt around their waste. When boxing skills decline and the reflexes are weakened and the punch loses its pop a fighter becomes an Opponent.

Look at fighters like Mosley-Darchinyan-Cotto-Abraham-Paulie Mag-Jab Judah-David Price-Chisora-Macklin-Magee-Rees-Mormeck and especially the retired Matt Hatton. All have been relegated to just an opponent status and usually a win for the new fighters coming along or the current champion who needs an easy fight and a sure win.

Mosley thinks Canelo has a good chance to beat Mayweather

alvarez3454By Dan Ambrose: Shane Mosley, 42, feels that WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) has improved a lot in each of his fights since he started following him, and he thinks that he a good chance of beating 36-year-old Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) on September 14th.

Mosley took a beating from Canelo last year in losing a 12 round unanimous decision. Mosley also was soundly beaten by Mayweather Jr. in 2010.

Mayweather Jr. did a better job in beating Mosley, but Canelo gave him more punishment due to his weight and size advantage over him.

Mosley possible opponent for Amir Khan on December 7th

mosley2312By Scott Gilfoid: If Amir Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) is unable to get a title shot against IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander on December 7th, the 42-year-old Shane Mosley (47-8-1, 39 KO’s) is a possible opponent to step in and face Khan.

Despite having lost 3 out of his last 5 fights, Mosley is currently ranked #5 WBA, #5 WBC in the welterweight division based on his narrow 12 round unanimous decision win over 2nd tier fighter Pablo Cesar Cano last May.

Khan is ranked #2 by the WBC with just a flimsy win over Julio Diaz as his own experience at welterweight. Diaz isn’t ranked in the top 15, and it’s anyone’s guess why the World Boxing Council gave Khan a #2 ranking at 147.

Anthony Mundine vs. Shane Mosley possible for October

mosley4434By Dan Ambrose: 41-year-old Shane Mosley (47-8-1, 39 KO’s) has reportedly been given an offer of close to $1.5 million to travel to Australia to fight 38-year-old former WBA super middleweight champion Anthony Mundine (44-5, 26 KO’s) in October, according to news.com.au.

If Mundine loses the fight, he says he’s going to retire from boxing. It’s not likely that Mundine will lose the fight, because he’s going to have a huge height and weight advantage over the soon to be 42-year-old Mosley.

Mundine is fighting at middleweight now, but he’s still pretty much a super middleweight in size at 5’11”. He’s come down in weight with the hopes that he can work his way into a big fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr., but that appears to be little more than a pipe dream at best.

Hearn to reveal who Kell Brook’s next opponent will be this week

brook20By Scott Gilfoid: Kell Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn is saying that he’ll be announcing who Kell Brook’s next opponent will be this week when he meets with the media. Brook will be fighting in September and Hearn says he has a big name for Brook to fight. The big name is rumored to be 41-year-old Shane Mosley.

I’m going to be laughing like mad if Hearn’s big name turns out to be Brook. This is so classic for Brook as far as opponents go. We’ve seen him fight Matthew Hatton, who was supposed to be a big name. We’ve seen him fight 40-year-old Lovemore N’dou.

Khan ranked #2 WBC at 147, Mosley #5

By Scott Gilfoid: The World Boxing Council rankings are out for June and it looks like they’ve put Amir Khan (28-3, 18 KO’s) back at #2 WBC in their welterweight rankings. Khan has lost two out of his last four fights, and he almost lost his last fight against non-top 15 ranked Julio Diaz last April. If that’s not enough, the WBC now has 41-year-old Shane Mosley (47-8-1, 39 KO’s) ranked #5, and Pablo Cesar Cano at #12 WBC.
