Martinez vs. Cotto Pre-Fight

martinez4444By James Allen: Anyone who has been following the build up to this fight will be well aware of the demands made by challenger Miguel Cotto to facilitate it. He wanted his name put before the champion’s in the promotional campaign. He wanted the bout fought at 159lbs; one pound under the middleweight limit. And on June 7th at Madison Square Garden, in front of what has become Cotto’s home crowd over the past few years, he will walk out and be introduced second to the ring, the spot traditionally held for the champion.

Cotto feels as though he has earned these allowances and has shown little humility as he steps up to become the first ever Puerto Rican to claim a strap in four divisions. He has consistently proven he can generate vast amounts of revenue whenever he fights, especially so when fighting on Puerto Rican Day Parade weekend in New York City. His fellow country men always turn out for their favorite son.

Roach: Sergio Martinez is going to need a lot of luck against Cotto

roach34By Dan Ambrose: Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s) will be an underdog this Saturday night in his title fight against WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) in Madison Square Garden, New York, but don’t tell that to Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach. He feels that it’s the 39-year-old Martinez who should be the underdog in this fight because he thinks he’s got the better guy in Cotto due to his training.

Roach’s main contribution to changing Cotto’s fighting technique since taking over as his new trainer last year was to have him throw more left hooks. From appearances, Cotto looks totally unchanged from before. If there is a change it’s so incredibly small that it’s difficult to really detect.

Sergio Martinez: Cotto is getting knocked out

sergio56(Photo credit: Top Rank and DiBella Entertainment/ Ed Mulholland )By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) is going into his fight this Saturday night against Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s) with the desire to knock Cotto out and show him that he made a big mistake in thinking that he’s an over-the-hill fighter because of his last performance against Martin Murray last year in April. Martinez had to labor for 12 rounds to earn a close decision against Murray, and it was one of Martinez’s worst performances in his career because Murray looked so average.

Martinez will get his chance on Saturday to show Cotto just how wrong he was in underestimating him when the two fighters go at it in Madison Square Garden in New York. If Martinez’s knee injury has healed enough to where he’s 75% of what he was before, then Cotto is going to have a lot of problems on Saturday. He doesn’t have the size, reach or the mobility to fight a guy like Martinez.

Kellerman: If Martinez is physically diminished, Cotto can beat him

martinez693By Dan Ambrose: Max Kellerman of HBO is giving Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s) a good chance of beating WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) on Saturday night if Martinez is physically deteriorated from old age and injuries. Kellerman feels that Cotto has failed each time he’s stepped up against good world class opposition in the past, and that the only time he succeeded was against Shane Mosley.

“This would be Cotto’s best win of his career. He’s never beaten an elite fighter except once with Shane Mosley,” Kellerman said to ESPN. “He’s going to need to concentrate on his body in the early rounds. With Freddie Roach now as his trainer, it looks like he’s becoming the kind of fighter he once was earlier in his career.

Sergio Martinez won’t be allowed to wear knee brace for Cotto fight on Saturday

martinez67889(Photo credit: Top Rank and DiBella Entertainment/ Ed Mulholland) By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) learned today that he won’t be permitted to wear a knee brace on his surgically repaired right knee for his title defense this Saturday night against Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s) at Madison Square Garden, in New York. thesweetscience.com is reporting that the New York State Athletic Commission won’t let Sergio wear the brace for some reason.

Apparently, nothing was said about him not being able to wear it in the contract language for the fight, and perhaps no one thought too much about it. But someone seems to have taken an issue with Sergio wearing the knee brace.

Cotto vs. Martinez Could Impact Several Weight Divisions

martinez7777(Photo credit: Top Rank and DiBella Entertainment/ Ed Mulholland) By Chester Rivers: When was the last time one fight had the potential to effect several weight divisions? From Manny Pacquiao at 147 to Andre Ward at 168, the major players in four different weight classes will be awaiting the outcome of Saturday’s night battle between 160 pound champion Sergio Martinez and challenger Miguel Cotto.

What impact will a Martinez victory have on the sport? Sergio Martinez has the frame to either move up to 168 or drop down to 154. If Martinez decide to move up in weight to 168 his name will immediately be linked to champions Andre Ward or Carl Froch of the U.K. If he decides to move down to 154 he could challenge the winner of Saul Alvarez and Esrilandy Lara.

Roach: Cotto will break Sergio Martinez down and get him out of there late

roach6666By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach has changed his knockout prediction for his fighter Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s) from scoring a quick knockout in the first 4 rounds to getting one late in the fight this Saturday night in Cotto’s title challenge against WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Roach believes that Cotto, with his left hook that he’s now using frequently, will wear the 39-year-old Martinez down until he’s too beaten up to take any further punishment late in the fight.

“I believe Cotto will knock Martinez out late in the rounds,” Roach said. “We’ll break him down and get him out of there.”

Sergio Martinez: Cotto’s going to be sorry he took this fight

martinez6By Dan Ambrose: With their big HBO pay-per-view match-up now less than a week away, WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) says he’s in top shape and ready to knock Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s) out in their fight next Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in New York. The 39-year-old Martinez says Cotto will regret having taken the fight with him after he gets done with him.

Martinez’s surgically repaired knee is ready to go, and he’s not going into this fight having re-injured his knee like he did in his previous fight against Martin Murray last April. Sergio’s knee was 70% for that fight, and he also had an injured left shoulder and a fractured left hand that he hurt in the fight.

I don’t see how Roach has changed Cotto, says Sarmiento

cotto644By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach has said that he’s made changed to Miguel Cotto’s style of fighting to have him implementing his hook more than in the recent past, but Pablo Sarmiento, the trainer for WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez, doesn’t see any changes to Cotto’s style of fighting at all.

Sarmiento listens to what Roach says, but he sees the same fighter virtually unchanged. Sarmiento concludes that Cotto is the same fighter he always was and that he would have beaten his last opponent Delvin Rodriguez even before Roach got there.

Martinez will easily TKO/KO Cotto within 9 rounds

martinez4545by Bob Smith: How anyone could pick Miguel Cotto over Sergio Martinez without actually working for Cotto or being Puerto Rican is beyond me.  Martinez possesses nearly every single advantage – speed, power, athleticism, technique, experience, size, skill, and so on.  Martinez has faced better opponents than Cotto with the exception of Mayweather and Pacquiao, two fighters who Cotto lost to.  And he has done so being the smaller man, but the harder puncher.

The plan for Cotto appears to be to come in and bludgeon the body of Martinez and throw a lot of left hooks, but the jab of Martinez, along with his movement, power, and quick in and out combinations, will completely frustrate and wear down Cotto.
