Quigg wants Santa Cruz or Frampton fights

Image: Quigg wants Santa Cruz or Frampton fights

By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBA super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg (32-1-2, 24 KOs) says he wants either a rematch against Carl Frampton or a title shot against newly crowned WBA Super World featherweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (33-1-1, 18 KOs) in his next fight. Quigg wants either one of those fights.

Quigg is ranked #5 WBC, #8 WBA in the featherweight division after beating Jose Cayetano on December 10 last year to win the vacant WBA International featherweight title in his first fight back since suffering a broken jaw in a 12 round split decision loss to Frampton on February 27 in 2016.

By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBA super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg has a nice little mismatch scheduled for early next month against #10 WBC fringe contender Jose Cayetano on December 10 on the undercard of the heavyweight clash between IBF champion Anthony Joshua and American Eric Molina at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, England.

Quigg vs. Cayetano (20-4, 9 KOs) will be featherweight. The two fighters will battle for the vacant WBA International 126lb title. Quigg (31-1-2, 23 KOs) is moving up in weight to go after bigger fights against Frampton and Lee Selby.

This is the first fight for Quigg since his loss to Carl Frampton last February. Quigg, 28, suffered a broken jaw in the 4th round, but he was able to continue fighting the rest of the way to lose a 12 round split decision.

Scott Quigg wants Nehomar Cermeno

quigg89

By Scott Gilfoid: #3 WBA Scott Quigg (31-1, 2, 23 KOs) is hoping to get a title shot against 36-year-old WBA World super bantamweight champion Nehomar Cermeno (24-5-1, 14 KOs) in the near future.

Cermeno has Quigg’s old World Boxing Association 122lb title that he lost recently to Carlo Frampton last February in a 12 round decision loss. Cermeno picked up the vacant WBA title last June after stopping Jun Qiu Ziao in the 12th round.

Before Quigg can get a shot against Cermeno, he’ll need to wait until he gets his first defense of his title out of the way against Anurak Thisa (17-0, 5) on September 30. Cermeno is reportedly interested in facing Quigg.

Hearn expects Quigg to be Frampton’s next opponent

hearn999

By Scott Gilfoid: Matchoom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn believes his fighter former WBA super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg (31-1-2, 23 KOs) will be the one that faces newly crowned WBA featherweight champion Carl Frampton (23-0, 14 KOs) in his first defense of his WBA belt at 126 rather than Leo Santa Cruz (32-1-1, 18 KOs) or Lee Selby.

Hearn won’t get into the details of why he believes that Quigg will be the one that faces Frampton next, but suffice it to say, he appears to be very, very confident that he’ll be getting his way. Frampton beat an injured Quigg by a 12 round split decision last February in a fight that could very well have gone the other way or at the minimum have been scored a draw.

Quigg says he’ll turn down Santa Cruz fight if offered

quigg6666

By Scott Gilfoid: Well, it looks like former WBA World super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg can’t let go of his 12 round split decision loss last February against Carl Frampton (22-0, 14 KOs). Instead of just forgetting about it and accepting reality that he wasn’t good enough, Quigg is pining away for a rematch against the 5’5” Frampton.

Indeed, Quigg (31-1-2, 23 KOs) wants a rematch so badly that he says he would turn down a title shot against WBA Super World featherweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (32-0-1, 18 KOs), who Frampton will be facing this month on July 30 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Frampton has already vacated his IBF/WBA super bantamweight titles in order to move up to featherweight to challenge Santa Cruz. Had Frampton decided to keep his 122lb belts, he would have had to face unbeaten two-time Olympic gold medalist Guillermo Rigondeaux, and that probably wouldn’t have worked out too well for him.

Scott Quigg to fight in November

quigg6666

By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBA World super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg (31-1, 23 KOs) will be returning to the ring in November against an opponent still to be determined. The 27-year-old has been out of the ring since suffering a broken jaw in his 12 round split decision loss to former IBF/WBA 122lb champion Carl Frampton last February, Quigg says he’d like a rematch with Frampton in the near future so that he can try and avenge the loss.

With Frampton facing WBA featherweight champion Leo Santa Cruz on July 30, and very likely to lose that fight, it’s quite possible that we could see Quigg and him facing each other real soon in a rematch.

“I’ll be doing a camp before a camp but I am now looking to make progress and I’m aiming for November,” said Quigg to skysports.com. “I will go straight back at the top level.

Quigg: I’d be confident going against Rigondeaux

quigg89By Patrick McHugh: Former WBA super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg (31-1-2, 23 KOs) is currently recovering from a broken jaw he suffered in his recent 12 round split decision loss to IBF 122lb champion Carl Frampton (22-1, 14 KOs) last February.

Quigg, 27, would like a rematch against Frampton after his jaw recovers. Quigg notes that Frampton choose to steer around a fight against unbeaten Cuban Guillermo Rigondeaux (16-0, 10 KOs).

Frampton’s decision to avoid the Rigondeaux fight has cost him his World Boxing Association title, because the WBA was going to order that he face the Cuban fighter. Quigg says he would have been confident in facing Rigondeaux if he were still the WBA champion.
