Walk Through History: Salvador Sanchez vs. Wilfredo Gomez

Wilfredo Gomez (44-3-1,42KO’s) was supremely confident that he would continue his unbeaten streak against the relatively unknown Salvador Sanchez (44-1-1, 32 KO’s). Gomez won the WBC super bantamweight title in 1977 by knocking out Korean Dong Kyun Yum (54-5-7, 21 KO’s) in twelve rounds. In 1978, he met Mexican great Carlos Zarate (66-4-0, 63 KO’s), who was a perfect 52-0 before falling to the talented Puerto Rican by knockout in the fifth round.

Salvador Sanchez Would Have Turned 50 This Week

sanchez34By Sam Gregory: The sport of boxing has had more than its share of great athletes whose careers were cut short and turned into a tragic ending. One of the greatest boxers in the last fifty years whose life was cut short is Salvador “Chava” Sanchez. If Salvador’s life had not been cut short, this week he would have celebrated his 50th birthday. Salvador Sanchez died tragically when the Porsche he was driving collided with a pick-up truck killing him and his passenger on August 12, 1982; Sanchez was just 23 years old.
