Paul Smith: Brook has a chance against Golovkin

smith761

By Scott Gilfoid: Former super middleweight world title challenger Paul Smith thinks that welterweight Kell Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) will be able to land some shots against IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) in the first few rounds of their fight on September 10. However, Smith sees Golovkin catching up to Brook after three rounds and the fight could go downhill for the British fighter from that point on. Smith, 33, isn’t ruling out an upset in the fight. Smith does think Brook has a chance to beat Golovkin, but he sees it as a tough ask. Brook will need to move up two entire weight divisions to fight Golovkin.

Brook and his promoter Eddie Hearn have made a big deal about him being a junior middleweight in size, and possibly even as big as Golovkin on the night of their fight on September 10.

Sullivan Barrera: Andre Ward struggled with Paul Smith

YouTube video

By Dan Ambrose: Sullivan Barrera (17-0, 12 KOs) saw tape of former WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward’s fight from last June against an out of shape and flabby Paul Smith, and he thinks Ward struggled in that fight, which he ultimately won by a 9th round knockout. Barrera feels he’s got a very real chance of beating the 31-year-old Ward in their fight this month on March 26 on HBO Boxing at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.

Paul Smith: I don’t want to retire!

ward88888(Photo credit: Tom Hogan – Hoganphotos/Roc Nation Sports) By Scott Gilfoid: Despite having been soundly beaten in his last three fights by Arthur Abraham and Andre Ward, former two time world title challenger Paul Smith (35-6, 20 KOs) stubbornly refuses to hang up the gloves yet and call it a day with his career.

Smith, 32, doesn’t want to retire and he doesn’t feel that he’s a shot fighter. Smith wasn’t competitive at all against Ward last June in losing by a 9th round knockout at the Oracle Arena in beautiful Oakland, California. But what’s more worrisome than how easily Smith was beaten and reduced to a bleeding pile punching bag was how heavy he struggled in trying to make the weight for the fight.

Paul Smith undecided about his future

smith455By Scott Gilfoid: With his latest defeat the hands of Andre Ward sending him skittering to his third straight loss, 32-year-old former British super middleweight champion Paul Smith isn’t sure what he’s going to do with his sagging career. He says he hasn’t even thought about what he’s going to do next. But if Smith does choose to continue, it’s pretty much academic at this point that he won’t be getting another world title shot or another catch-weight fight against a world champion anytime soon, if ever.

Nothing has really changed in terms of Smith’s ability in the last three fights. He’s still the same fighter who fought WBO super middleweight champion Arthur Abraham twice and lost both fights.

Paul Smith’s trainer wants him to retire

smith6788By Scott Gilfoid: After the beating he took from WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward last Saturday night in their catch-weight fight at 172 pounds, Paul Smith’s future is in doubt. Smith’s trainer Joe Gallagher wants him to retire from boxing at this point, as he feels like the 32-year-old Smith has nothing else left to prove.

Paul Smith has just been involved with three consecutive big fights against Ward and Arthur Abraham [twice], and there’s really not much else Smith can do at this point other than hang around and fight domestic level opposition.

Paul Smith: Ward isn’t the biggest puncher

ward53543By Scott Gilfoid: After getting blasted out in nine rounds last night by WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) in Oakland, California, Paul Smith (35-6, 20 KOs) says that Ward isn’t that big of a puncher.

Smith, 32, didn’t say who he’s been in with that is a bigger puncher than Ward, but he obviously feels like Ward isn’t a huge puncher. Just so you know, Smith’s nose was broken in the fight, and that was a first for him.

Ward stops Smith in one-sided massacre

ward7777(Photo credit: Tom Hogan – Hoganphotos/Roc Nation Sports) By Scott Gilfoid: In a total mismatch, WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) really had his way tonight in stopping an out of shape and badly outclassed Paul Smith (35-6, 20 KOs) by a 9th round stoppage at the Oracle Arena in Beautiful Oakland, California.

Ward hit Smith at will and looked like he’d never been away. Smith’ corner tossed in the white towel of surrender in the 9th round.

Ward crushes Smith

ward88888(Photo credit: Tom Hogan – Hoganphotos/Roc Nation Sports) By Scott Gilfoid: England’s Paul Smith (35-6, 20 KOs) tried his best, but he didn’t have talent to compete with WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) tonight in their bout at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.

Coming off of a long 19-month layoff, Ward calmly picked the 32-year-old Smith apart with beautiful pot shots like a surgeon operating on a patient. Smith’s face was bleeding red blood from the brutal right hands, left hooks and jabs that Ward kept piercing him with in each round. It was just incredible to watch Ward’s mastery in the ring.

Paul Smith weighs 184.4 at 11am weight check, loses $15K from purse

ward111(Photo credit: Tom Hogan – Hoganphotos/Roc Nation Sports) By Scott Gilfoid: Poor Paul Smith (35-5, 20 KOs) failed to hit the 181 pounds at today’s 11:00 a.m. secondary weigh-in for his fight tonight against Andre Ward (27-0, 14 KOs) at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.

Smith came in at 184.4lbs, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. This was 3.4lbs more than the 181lb limit that he was allowed to rehydrate to for secondary weigh-in. As such, Smith will lose an additional $15 thousand from his dwindling purse. Ward ad Smith had an agreement that they couldn’t come in over 181 for today’s 11am secondary weigh-in.
