De La Hoya: It’s not going to be easy for Pacquiao to come back from his KO loss

pac67By Chris Williams: Oscar De La Hoya has serious doubts about whether Manny Pacquiao will ever be the same fighter after his KO loss to Juan Manuel Marquez on December 8th of this month. De La Hoya joins Bernard Hopkins and many others who question whether Pacquiao will be able to recover from the crushing knockout he suffered in the 6th round in his fight with Marquez because of how devastating the knockout was.

De La Hoya said to Power 106 FM “It’s not going to be easy to come back. That’s going to be the million dollar question. It’s always going to be there psychologically, ‘can I take that shot.’ History shows it’s impossible to come back.”

De La Hoya to step Deontay Wilder up against some talented fighters in 2013

wilder54By Scott Gilfoid: Oscar De La Hoya wants to step the talented unbeaten heavyweight prospect up against some excellent fighters in 2013 to see how Wilder reacts. De La Hoya wants to see if Wilder can handle the adversity of being in the ring with someone that is trying to take his head off in the same way the he’s trying to take there, but most of all De La Hoya wants to see whether Wilder has the talent to become a world champion someday. The best way to do that is to put him in with a top 15 contender to see how he reacts.

De La Hoya said to RingTV “It’s time for him [Wilder] to have a taste of hostile territory. It’s time for him to step it up, which we’re going to do. We have to take him out of his element. Deontay needs to be in there with a guy that’s going to push him back.”

De La Hoya: Deontay Wilder needs improvement

wilder2By Allan Fox: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya thinks unbeaten heavyweight prospect Deontay Wilder (26-0, 26 KO’s) has a couple of flaws in his game that he needs to fix before he can become a really superb heavyweight and move onto to capture a world title. De La Hoya told RingTV that Wilder needs to work on these flaws in his game if he wants to be able to get to the next level.

De La Hoya said to RingTV “Deontay Wilder has to work more on his jab, because he has a tremendous jab. He has to work more on his head movement. I don’t see many flaws in him other than the ones.”
De La Hoya didn’t look pleased with Wilder’s performance last Saturday night in watching De La Hoya’s body language while he was observing Wilder fighting an over-matched Kevlin Price at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles, California.

De La Hoya sees Mayweather Sr. as the best trainer in the game today

mayweather72By Chris Williams: It seems like Manny Pacquiao may have been with the wrong trainer all these years he’s been with Freddie Roach. Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions swears by Floyd Mayweather Sr. and sees him as the best trainer in boxing bar none, and I think he may be right. After all, Mayweather Sr. is the one that worked with his son Mayweather Jr. in the beginning stages of his boxing education. You have to wonder if Mayweather Sr. could have saved Pacquiao from getting knocked out last Saturday night had he been his trainer instead of Roach.

De La Hoya said to examiner.com “Let’s just put it this way, to me, this day, Floyd Mayweather Jr. is the best trainer in the world, hands down…he teaches you the art of boxing. He teaches you the art of defense.”

The Mayweather Effect

Let’s look at the facts and check the current status of Mayweather’s last 6 opponents;

De La Hoya confident Cotto will beat Trout; sees Canelo Alvarez bout possible after that

Image: De La Hoya confident Cotto will beat Trout; sees Canelo Alvarez bout possible after thatBy Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya is confident that Miguel Cotto (37-3, 30 KO’s) will get by WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (25-0, 14 KO’s) in their fight on December 1st at the Madison Square Garden, in New York, New York. Following this fight, De La Hoya sees a possible unification bout between WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Cotto, with the WBA 154 strap that he wins from Trout.

De La Hoya said to Primerahora.com “We are very confident that Cotto will come out with his hand raised. A possible fight with Alvarez would be quite an event. Duels between Mexicans and Puerto Ricans are always attractive…A fight between the two [Cotto and Alvarez] would be a very big event.”

De La Hoya sees Trout as a very dangerous opponent for Cotto

Image: De La Hoya sees Trout as a very dangerous opponent for Cotto(Photo: Tom Casino/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya, the president of Golden Boy Promotions, is very worried about Miguel Cotto’s next fight against WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (25-0, 14 KO’s) on December 1st. De La Hoya doesn’t like this match-up for the short 5’7″ Cotto and he feels that Cotto might have made a mistake in taking this fight given that he’s got bigger money options available against the likes of WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez next year.

De La Hoya said to Boxingmundial.com “He [Trout] has everything to win and nothing to lose…It’s a dangerous fight. I personally don’t like it…very difficult. Unpredictable.”

I agree with De La Hoya’s thoughts, but I think the fight has got to happen. If you’ve got a guy like Cotto who’s gotten a little older and is ready to be ripped apart by the young lions like Trout, it’s got to be done.
