De La Hoya: Canelo can prove he’s the real deal by beating Trout

SanAntonio_0U9C2206_send(Photos: Stephanie Trapp/SHOWTIME) By Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions says his fighter WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) has the chance to show the world that he’s not just a fighter that’s built up from hype, but is the real thing by beating WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) in their unification match next month on April 20th at the Alamodome, in San Antonio, Texas, USA.

De La Hoya said “This is an opportunity for Canelo to show everyone in boxing that he is the real deal…we don’t know who is going to win.”

True it is a chance for the red-haired Canelo to prove that he belongs at the top not because of how popular he is due to his Mexican fans, but rather because of what he actually does in the ring. If Canelo can beat Trout convincingly without controversy, then he belongs among the very best at 154.

Until then, you have to look at Canelo with a lot of doubt and suspicion due to the incredibly soft matchmaking that De La Hoya and Golden Boy has done for the 22-year-old Canelo over the years. Sadly, Canelo’s toughest fight of his career came against a shot 41-year-old Shane Mosley, and Canelo looked terrible in that fight.

De La Hoya said to WhamBamSe “It’s going to be a tough fight. It’s going to be a physical fight, which Robert is going to make. And we have to wait and see if Father Time is maybe catching up? [with Floyd] Who knows? I’m going to go with Guerrero by decision.”

De La Hoya: I’m going to spar with Canelo for Trout fight

dela hoya324By Dan Ambrose: In a show of support for his young red-haired star, Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya says he’s going to spar with WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 Ko’s) to get him ready for his unification clash against WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) on April 20th at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

De La Hoya said on his social media site, “For Canelo’s fight against the Dangerous Trout, I’m going to spar with Saul. I’ll send video soon. Let’s go San Antonio.”

De La Hoya must really worried for Canelo if he’s volunteering to do some sparring with him because a loss for who Trout calls Golden Boy’s Golden Goose [Canelo] would be disastrous in terms of slowing down Canelo’s progress into turning into a pay-per-view star along the lines of Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao.

De La Hoya: Broner would take Juan Manuel Marquez no problems

provodnikovBy Chris Williams: Earlier today, Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions was in the mood to tease Top Rank about matching WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley (29-0, 12 KO’s) against Ruslan Provodnikov (22-1, 15 KO’s) on March 16th.

The 29-year-old Provodnikov is known to American boxing fans because of the many occasions his fights have been televised on ESPN rather than the premium cable networks HBO and Showtime. It’s perceived by a lot of boxing fans that the more talented fighters compete on HBO and Showtime.

De La Hoya: The $3 mil offer to Donaire/Top Rank is legit for Mares fight

delahoya6By Chris Williams: Oscar De La Hoya says that Golden Boy Promotions’ offer of $3 million to WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire and his promoters at Top Rank for a unification bout against WBC super bantamweight champion Abner Mares is totally legit.

The $3 million is for Donaire and Bob Arum of Top Rank to split among themselves depending on what percentage of a cut Top Rank takes out of Donaire’s purses when he fights.

De La Hoya said to thaboxingvoice.com “They [Donaire & Arum] can split it up the way they want to. I don’t know what type of deal they have with Bob Arum and Nonito. Maybe it’s a 60/40 deal, maybe it’s a 50/50 deal.

delahoya2By Chris Williams: Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions ruled out Top Rank fighter WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley as one of the candidates for Floyd Mayweather Jr’s next fight on May 4th, and he also doesn’t see them ever fighting.

De La Hoya said to the thaboxingvoice.com when asked if Bradley would fight Mayweather next, “No, never, that’s not even a possibility. If you look at their [Top Rank] roster of who they have, who is Tim Bradley going to fight? What do they have to keep telling him, a bunch of lies? It’s not fair to the fighter.”
