De La Hoya says he could find a replacement for Schaefer to run Golden Boy Promotions

de la hoya33By Chris Williams: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya, the major shareholder for Golden Boy, says he’d like to keep Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer with the company, and he’s not interested in removing him from the head of the company. However, De La Hoya says if he has to, he’ll find somebody to take over the job just like he found Schaefer many years ago and put him as the head of his company. Right now it’s unclear whether Schaefer will be staying with Golden Boy or moving on to head his own company in the near future.

“Nobody’s going to dismiss Richard,” De La Hoya said via Mlive. “He’s not getting fired. I don’t want him to leave.

Schaefer: I have no interest in dealing with Bob Arum

schaefer2By Chris Williams: Earlier this week Golden Boy Promotions president and chief shareholder Oscar De La Hoya said that he has no problems working with Bob Arum of Top Rank, and that he’s interested in putting a fight together between Golden Boy promoted fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Arum’s top fighter Manny Pacquiao.

Well, it looks like that’s not going to happen unless De La Hoya makes a move to convince Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer because he still has no interest in working with Arum. Schaefer is saying he runs Golden Boy unless Oscar wants to fire him.

In-Fighting: Signs of division in Golden Boy slowly showing up

delahoya92By Raj Parmar: Back in 2007, then super welterweight champion Oscar De La Hoya faced off against Floyd Mayweather in one of the richest fights in boxing history. The fight was promoted by Golden Boy Promotions (founded by De La Hoya in 2002) and a heated build up between Oscar and Mayweather ensued, so much that there is still high tension between the two to this day.

Both Oscar and Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer were greatly disappointed when Mayweather pulled out a split decision win, as Oscar and Richard were very close personally and professionally at this point.

De La Hoya speaking with Arum about Canelo vs. Pacquiao super fight in 2014

canelo44By Chris Williams: Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions is reportedly in talks with Top Rank promoter Bob Arum about a possible super fight between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Arum’s fighter Manny Pacquiao for later this year. De La Hoya says he has no beef with the 82-year-old Arum, who used to promote him during his boxing career, and he feels that the two of them can work with each other to make some big fights. Arum is open to working with De La Hoya for fight.

“Anything is possible,” De La Hoya said to the LA Times about a Pacquiao vs. Canelo fight. “That’s one of the reasons I was extending the olive branch. The fans want to see these fights.”

De La Hoya: I would have beaten Mayweather if I was younger

de la hoya468By Dan Ambrose: Former 6 division world champion Oscar De La Hoya (39-6, 30 KO’s) said today that he feels he would have beaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26 KO’s) if the two of them had fought while he was in his prime of his career instead of at the end of it. De La Hoya was 34-years-old when he fought Mayweather in 2007, and he ended up losing by a close 12 round split decision by the scores 116-112 and 115-113 for Mayweather, and 115-113 for De La Hoya.

“Everyone has failed against Floyd Mayweather because he’s obviously the best,” De La Hoya said. “Explaining why 45 have failed to beat Floyd. He (Floyd) is slippery and tough to hit…this is my experience…I feel if I was younger I would have beat him.”

Saul “Canelo” Alavarez, The New Oscar De La Hoya

canelo999By Mauricio Carranza: Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s) is fighting WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s) On July 12th at the MGM Grand Casino and Hotel, which should be a good fight if things go well for the young Mexican fighter because let’s face it, Lara has a style that can sometimes put people to sleep.

Even though I believe that Lara can win by boxing and moving well, I think it would be better for boxing if Canelo wins, simply because Canelo seems to be the new Oscar De La Hoya.

Oscar De La Hoya: Victor Ortiz should call it a day

By Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions is recommending that the birthday body Victor Ortiz (29-5-2, 22 KO’s) think about hanging up his gloves and going in another direction following his crushing 2nd round defeat last Thursday night against the light-hitting Luis Collazo (35-5, 18 KO’s) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Ortiz, by the way, turns 27 today. What a day to celebrate his birthday.

Oscar’s blueprint for dummies

floyd784332By Van Dunn: Now that the much hyped Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fight is over, and Mayweather Jr. has once again showed the boxing world that he is in a class above everyone else, we can all sit back and chuckle. Chuckle not at the fact that Mayweather totally outclassed the younger, stronger and immensely confident fighter in Alvarez, nor chuckle at how easy that Mayweather made this fight look, or even chuckle at the incompetency of the majority decision empowered by the 114-114 score of a renegade judge.

As I now sit back and review the fight in my head, I keep hearing that earth shattering and mind blowing decree uttered by the great and mighty Golden Boy himself……”I have the blueprint to beat Mayweather”. Now as much of a deep and profound proclamation this appears to be, I can’t help but laugh because Oscar’s blueprint has been proven to be nothing more than “Fools Gold”.

Is De La Hoya letting Alvarez down?

DSC_5213(Photo credit: Steve Lopez) By Nick Hagen: It’s unbelievable timing for Oscar De La Hoya to book himself into rehab only five days before the mega fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. 44-0 and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez 42-0-1

De La Hoya has voluntarily booked himself into a clinic, for yet undisclosed reasons. (However he has a well documented history of alcoholic and substance abuse).

Many boxing fans, me included, are asking the question; why De La Hoya couldn’t of waited until next week, to make such a decision.

Alvarez already has a mountain to climb this coming weekend, if he is going to dethrone the P4P number 1 star. Alvarez especially needs the backing and support, from his family, close friends, trainers and in so many ways De La Hoya his own Promoter.

Canelo will not use Oscar’s blueprint

canelo9111By Mr. Pennington: I don’t think Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will be using Oscar’s infamous blueprint this Saturday against Floyd Mayweather Jr. I think Canelo may barrow part of it, but I don’t see him using the constant attack that Oscar did. Keep in mind Oscar was a jabber his whole career, Canelo is more of a boxer puncher. By judging the on goings in Canelo training, he has reiterated several times that he liked how Cotto fought Mayweather.

We also seen team Canelo watching the Mayweather Cotto fight in episode 3 of all access. These slight indications lead me to believe the approach will be more methodic than chaotic.
