Canelo orders De La Hoya to book Cinco de Mayo date for next fight

canelo9999By Cameron Gillon: Golden Boy promotions founder Oscar De La Hoya has said if the Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez vs. Miguel Cotto mega fight doesn’t happen in May 2015, he hopes he can match the red haired Mexican against fellow Mexican Julio Cesar Chavez Jr at a catch weight of 159, according to The Record.

He went on to say the fight would sell big with the Mexican audience and would be a big pay per view fight with the correct backing. Oscar did say the fight between Alvarez and Cotto will likely happen, but he wants to make sure he has a backup fight if it falls through.

Oscar De La Hoya throws full support behind Maidana

maidana666By Raj Parmar: In a recent interview, Golden Boy chief Oscar De La Hoya made it known that he is firmly behind Marcos Maidana to upset Floyd Mayweather tomorrow night. This comes as little surprise given the well documented animosity between Oscar and Floyd. The former world champion believes age may be catching up with the pound for pound king and that Floyd may have declined physically since the first fight with Maidana.

“I’m 100% with Maidana,” De La Hoya stated as per esnewsreporting.com, “You never know because Mayweather is 37 years old. You age in boxing overnight.”

Quillin will likely face Jacobs in fall, says De La Hoya

quillin3By Dan Ambrose: Peter Quillin (31-0, 22 KOs) unexpectedly vacated his WBO middleweight title on Thursday after he’d earlier been given two extensions by the World Boxing Organization to sign for his November 1st title defense against mandatory challenger Matt Korobov.

A lot of boxing fans believe that Quillin and his adviser Al Haymon chose to relinquish the title due to the danger that Korobov presented to him. But Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya says that Quillin has his sights set on fighting WBA 160 pound champion Daniel Jacobs (28-1, 25 KOs) next fall at a still to be determined date and venue.

De La Hoya says he’ll work on Danny Garcia vs. Lamont Peterson fight

By Dan Ambrose: Responding to small pockets of interest from boxing fans in a potential unification fight between IBF light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson and WBA/WBC 140 pound champion Danny Garcia, Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya says he’s going to start working on putting together the fight. He wants to make the fight for the fans, who really aren’t beating down Golden Boy’s door to see the fight. To honest, Peterson still hasn’t been looked at the same way by fans ever since he was obliterated by Lucas Matthysse. Fans would probably prefer to see a Garcia vs. Matthysse rematch or Garcia vs. Mauricio Herrera rather than seeing Garcia matched up against a guy that Matthysse easily beat in Peterson.

Will Golden Boy drama effect Mayweather-Maidana event?

floyd777771By Raj Parmar: As the Floyd Mayweather Jr – Marcos Maidana rematch inches closer, the boxing landscape has become disarrayed at the highest levels. This past weekend, boxing fans loudly complained of the horrific mismatches taking place on the Danny Garcia-Rod Salka card on Showtime.

The venom in the air surrounding the card was not strictly coming from fans however, as tension flowed between the major power players in the sport of boxing as well.

De La Hoya: These matches [Garcia-Salka & Peterson-Santana] were made for a reason

delahoya56By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya did his best this past week in trying to justify the reasoning for the August 9th mismatches on Showtime between WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (28-0, 16 KOs) and unranked lightweight Rod Salka (19-3, 3 KOs) and IBF welterweight champion Lamont Peterson (32-2-1, 16 KO’s) and #12 WBA, #13 IBF fringe contender Edgar Santana (29-4, 20 KOs) from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

The only excuse that De La Hoya could come up with is that it was a way of testing Garcia and Peterson, by matching them against guys that have virtually no chance of beating them.

De La Hoya: Quillin would do a number on Golovkin

golovkin303By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya says he likes the idea of matching his fighter WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin (31-0, 22 KOs) up against WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs), and he likes the 31-year-old Quillin’s chances of beating Golovkin if that fight takes place.

De La Hoya said “Would love to see @KIDCHOCOLATE [Quillin] vs. GGG. My Latino brother [Quillin] would do a number on the G man.”

Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions responded back, saying “Would love to see that fight too.”

Dela Hoya may not agree to a Canelo-Golovkin Fight

canelo14By Idris Morrey: The kind of talent waiting to face Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is growing steadily by the day. Names are coming up and they have convincing records to deserve a match-up with the hard hitting Mexican.

The worrying bit is whether Canelo Alvarez’s promoter and Golden boy president Oscar Dela Hoya will really accept to let lose one of his from from the stable to face the dangerous middleweight fighters. From earlier on, it was expressed during the All Access Showtime episodes that De La Hoya was against Canelo fighting the Cuban Boxer Erislandy Lara. From his style, the left- handed Lara has been a dreaded fighter. Oscar publicly confessed that he did not want Canelo to face the Cuban. In their recent fight, it became evident that Dela Hoya’s fear was real from the beginning
