De La Hoya working on big fights for 2015

delahoya92By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya is working on some important fights for some of his biggest stars for 2015. De La Hoya specifically mentions Adrien Broner, Keith Thurman, Lucas Matthysse, Abner Mares, and Robert Guerrero.

All of those fighters have been taking it easy for a while and it would be good to finally see them matched up against some quality fighters once again.

De La Hoya to make Danny Garcia vs. Lamont Peterson in early 2015

garcia67By Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions says he’s going to try and put together a unification fight between WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (29-0, 17 KOs) and IBF 147lb title holder Lamont Peterson (33-2-1, 17 KOs) for early 2015.

This is a fight that should have been made in 2014, but instead Garcia’s adviser Al Haymon matched him against the much smaller lightweight Rod Salka in a fight that turned out to be a dreadful mismatch last August.

De La Hoya: Canelo will fight on May 2nd no matter who he faces

canelo678By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya says that his fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) will still fight on May 2nd no matter who his opponent is. If he can’t get a fight against WBC middleweight title holder Miguel Cotto, then Canelo will still be fighting on May 2nd against whoever De La Hoya can dig up for him.

What De La Hoya isn’t saying is whether Canelo’s fight will be on HBO pay-per-view or not or just regular HBO. If Floyd Mayweather Jr faces someone good like Manny Pacquiao, or even a halfway decent opponent, then it’s going to be next to impossible for Canelo to bump Mayweather from the May 2nd date.

De La Hoya: The Cotto vs. Canelo fight will continue the Mexico vs. Puerto Rico boxing rivalry

canelo632By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya is banking on the proposed fight between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) reviving the Mexico vs. Puerto Rican rivalry like it was in the past when the likes of Antonio Margarito and Cotto faced each other in two bouts.

The Cotto-Canelo fight still hasn’t been negotiated and there are major questions whether it’s a fight that can be negotiated unless there’s movement on the side of the 24-year-old Canelo. If Al Haymon’s alleged $40 million offer to Cotto to face Floyd Maywesther Jr is true, then it’s very likely that Cotto will take that offer.

De La Hoya wants the top fighters to challenge themselves in 2015

By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya says that his resolution is for the top fighters in boxing to challenge themselves to fight the very best competition next year in 2015. Unless De La Hoya is talking about Golden Boy fighters, it’s hard for that to be considered a resolution, because De La Hoya only has control over the fighters in his own stable.

De La Hoya: Mayweather and Pacquiao have equal power

delahoya7777By Chris Williams: While Manny Pacquiao has been known to be a puncher with excellent power over the years, Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya refutes that notion.

De La Hoya says that Pacquiao hits no harder than Floyd Mayweather Jr, who isn’t thought of as a big puncher by anyone. Mayweather is someone that picked up a lot of knockouts earlier in his career in the lighter weights at super featherweight before he moved up in weight to welterweight.

Pacquiao is kind of in the same boat in that regard. Pacquiao picked up a ton of knockouts in the lighter weight classes, but since he moved up to welterweight, his knockouts have dried up after he initially stopped De La Hoya and Miguel Cotto. Pacquiao’s fight against Ricky Hatton was at light welterweight, so it doesn’t count as far as what Pacquiao has done at welterweight. Pacquiao’s power has had little effect on the welterweights in the past four years, and that doesn’t seem to be changing as he gets older.

Khan would give Pacquiao serious problems, says De La Hoya

khan84By Jim Dower: Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) says he wants a big name in 2015, and he’s hoping that he can get a fight against either Floyd Mayweather Jr or Manny Pacquiao, preferably both next year.

Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya thinks Khan would give Pacquiao some difficulty due to his talent and fighting style.

“As I was watching myself get demolished by Manny Pacquiao [in 2008]. I couldn’t help but think about Amir King Khan giving Pac some serious problems,” De La Hoya said on his Twitter.

De La Hoya: I will be using the pressure of the fans to bring best fights in 2015

delahoya56By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya is saying that he plans on bring the best fights possible in 2015. This is kind of a yearly thing, and you can only wish it were true. De La Hoya may need to check with Al Haymon before he makes big pronouncements like bringing the best fights because we didn’t see the best fights in 2014.

Danny Garcia vs. Rod Salka and Lamont Peterson vs. Edgar Santana are just two of the less than pleasing fights we saw this year. How about Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Alfredo Angulo. That wasn’t very good either.

Canelo: Oscar is getting me May 2nd and September fight dates

canelo06By Dan Ambrose: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) still insists that he’ll be fighting on May 2nd and in September of next year despite the fact that Floyd Mayweather Jr has already said that he plans on fighting on those dates next year.

Canelo wants to fight on the Mexican holidays in May and September, and he sees it as a case of him wanting to take the dates due to him being Mexican. However, it might end up biting Canelo in the backside if he does try and compete with the popular Mayweather because it’ll mean that Canelo’s pay-per-view numbers for those months will likely wind up much smaller than they would be if he were to fight on another date.
