De La Hoya didn’t say when he would like the Mayweather-Canelo rematch to take place, but it would seem likely that De La Hoya would jump at the chance to make the fight next September if that’s going to be the last fight of Mayweather’s career.

De La Hoya says he’ll wait 2 years before matching Canelo with Golovkin

Canelo Alvarez v James Kirkland(Photo Credit:Ed Mulholland/Golden Boy/Golden Boy via Getty Images) By Dan Ambrose: Last night, Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya shutdown any talk of a fight between his fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) and WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (32-0, 29 KOs) by saying that he prefers that fans wait two years before he makes that fight.

De La Hoya says that Canelo, 24, can still comfortably make the 154 pound weight division right now, and that he feels that a fight between him and Golovkin will be much bigger in two years from now.

“Canelo will fight Golovkin when the time is right,” says De La Hoya

Canelo Alvarez v James Kirkland(Photo Credit:Ed Mulholland/Golden Boy/Golden Boy via Getty Images) By Allan Fox: Now that his flagship fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) has gotten past the formidable James Kirkland (32-2, 28 KOs) by a 3rd round knockout last Saturday night, Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya is going to sit down and start planning for Canelo’s next fight in September or October.

One name that won’t be in the equation for the 24-year-old Canelo’s next fight is WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (32-0, 29 KOs). De La Hoya says he’s going to make the fight between Canelo and Golovkin when the time is right. Evidently this isn’t the right time to put the fight together, according to De La Hoya.

De La Hoya: Canelo vs. Golovkin will be a huge fight down the road

Canelo Alvarez v James Kirkland(Photo Credit:Ed Mulholland/Golden Boy/Golden Boy via Getty Images) By Dan Ambrose: With Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s impressive 3rd round knockout win over James Kirkland (32-2, 28 KOs) last Saturday night, boxing fans want to knock if Canelo is finally ready to step inside the ring with WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin. After all, Canelo has fought three straight fights in the middleweight division in catch-weighs of 155 pounds.

Canelo himself said last night that a fight between him and Golovkin will have to wait until the future because the two of them are fighting in different divisions at the moment, even though Canelo’s last three fights have taken place in the same division as Golovkin.

De La Hoya says Canelo-Kirkland fight won’t have any running

1-CaneloKirklandWorkout1By Dan Ambrose: In what appears to be a shot at the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao fight, promoter Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions says that this Saturday catch-weight fight between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) and James Kirkland (32-1, 28 KOs) won’t have any running when the two of them meet each other at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas.

De La Hoya is predicting the fight will be a slugfest from start to finish, and he could be right unless Canelo retreats to the ropes and fights defensively like he did in his fight against Austin Trout in 2013.

De La Hoya picks Mayweather to defeat Pacquiao

1-Pacquiao_Mayweather_150429_008aBy Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya doesn’t have any vested interest in this Saturday’s mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, as he doesn’t promote either of these two superstar fighters for their fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

De La Hoya does have an opinion on the fight. He says his heart is with the 36-year-old Filipino Pacquiao, but his brain tells him that Mayweather will come out on top at the end.

De La Hoya: Pacquiao has the advantage against Mayweather

delahoya7777By Chris Williams: If you listen to Oscar De La Hoya, Floyd Mayweather Jr. is in deep, deep trouble against Manny Pacquiao in their fight coming up next month.

De La Hoya thinks Mayweather could fall behind in the fight early and then be put into a position where he’ll need to change his normal fighting style by being the aggressor instead of the counter puncher against Pacquiao.

De La Hoya thinks Mayweather isn’t comfortable being the aggressor in his fights, and this could lead to him struggling to try and get back into the fight.

De La Hoya says Matthysse will move on, no rematch with Provodnikov

Matthysse decision's Provodnikov in a warBy Allan Fox: If you were one of the many boxing fans who were looking forward to seeing a rematch between Lucas Matthysse (37-3, 34 KOs) and the “Siberian Rocky” Ruslan Provodnikov (24-4, 17 KOs), you can forget it because the rematch isn’t happening, say Matthysse’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya.

De La Hoya says he’s going to move the 32-year-old Matthysse forward to bigger and possibly better fights in the future rather than putting him back in with the 31-year-old Provodnikov for another fight. This is bad news for boxing fans obviously.
