De La Hoya: Floyd Mayweather Is Not TBE; I Beat Him

de la hoya56By Allan Fox: Former six division world champion Oscar De La Hoya (39-6, 30 KOs) doesn’t believe that Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26 KOs) is “The Best Ever” [TBE] as he likes to say about himself. De La Hoya says there are a lot of better fighters in the past that were superior fighters to Mayweather, who he felt could be TBE.

De La Hoya says he beat Mayweather in their first fight in May 2007. However, Mayweather technically was given the victory by a 12 round split decision by the scores of 116-112, 115-113 for Mayweather, and 115-113 for De La Hoya.

De La Hoya slams Mayweather for boring fight

Floyd Mayweather vs Andre BertoBy Allan Fox: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya kicked sand in the face of Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26 KOs) last night on his Twitter account for his very boring 12 round unanimous decision win over Andre Berto (30-4, 23 KOs) on Showtime PPV from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mayweather won the fight by the scores of 120-108, 117-111 and 118-110. De La Hoya isn’t the only one that was bored by Mayweather’s fight last night. The internet message boards were filled with angry boxing fans who felt that the Mayweather-Berto fight was an incredibly boring affair and not worth the $75.99 that the fight cost on PPV.

De La Hoya: Lemieux will KO Golovkin in 5 rounds

1-GolovkinLemieuxNYPC_Hoganphotos16By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya expects his fighter IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux (34-2, 31 KOs) to make quick work of IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) in their unification fight on October 17th at Madison Square Garden in New York.

De La Hoya expects Lemieux to get to Golovkin’s chin by 5th round. He thinks it’s a fight where the 26-year-old Lemieux will get to Golovkin early. De La Hoya thinks that his other important fight between his fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto will be just as exciting, but it will lost possibly until the 10th round. De La Hoya sees Canelo getting a stoppage win by the 10th.

De La Hoya: Cotto-Canelo could hit 2 million mark on PPV

Image: De La Hoya: Cotto-Canelo could hit 2 million mark on PPVBy Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya thinks that the mega-clash between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) and Golden Boy fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) could wind up bringing in more PPV buys than the September 18th, 1999 fight between De La Hoya and Felix Trinidad.

That fight brought in 1.4 million PPV buys. However, Canelo believes that the Cotto vs. Canelo fight can bring in 2 million PPV buys on HBO, which would make it the 4th highest PPV fight in history.

De La Hoya says there could be Cotto-Canelo trilogy; hints that Golovkin fight not happening soon

Image: De La Hoya says there could be Cotto-Canelo trilogy; hints that Golovkin fight not happening soonBy Dan Ambrose: While Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya has said that he wants to put on the fights that the boxing fans want to see, one fight that they might not get a chance to see for a while is a match-up between Golden Boy flagship fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) and IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs).

De La Hoya didn’t come right out and say that a fight between Canelo and Golovkin won’t be happening, but he did drop a very big hint that the fight probably won’t be happening anytime soon.

De La Hoya says 2.5 million fans won’t see boxing again after Mayweather-Pacquiao fight

Floyd Mayweather JrBy Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya says that the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao last May turned off 2.5 million new boxing fans, who he feels will never come back to watch another boxing event due to De La Hoya believing that the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight failed to provide the action and excitement that it was originally billed as potentially supplying. For De La Hoya, it obviously hits him hard if the casual fans don’t come back to watch future pay-per-view fights, because he promotes a lot of fights, and it will be bad if the fan don’t come back.

“Pacquiao-Mayweather didn’t live up to expectations whatsoever,” De La Hoya said to Fighthype.com. “You had 2.5 million people, new customers, disappointed. They wanted to see a fight, and now these are never going to want to see boxing again because of that fight. So that’s what I have a problem with. Now I’m speaking as a promoter. I love fights. I love action. I want to see an action fight. That’s what I’m going to see on November 21st [with Canelo vs. Cotto],” De La Hoya said.

De La Hoya: Canelo will be the No.1 fighter in boxing for the next 10 years if he beats Cotto

canelo100(Photo credit: World Boxing Council) By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya says that his fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s fight against WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) is more important for Canelo than his bout against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013, because if Canelo beats Cotto, it will take Canelo to the No.1 position in all of boxing and keep him there for the next 10 years, says De La Hoya.

Just how Canelo will be able to take the No.1 spot and keep himself there for a decade is unclear. Beating Cotto is one thing, but trying to stay on top of the sport for 10 full years is quite another thing completely. De La Hoya appears so desperate to have a fighter as popular as Mayweather in his Golden Boy stable that he’s making bold pronouncements about it ahead of time, as if that will do the trick by putting a suggestion in the minds of boxing fans. I’m afraid it doesn’t work that way.

De La Hoya says he wants Golovkin-Lemieux winner to face Cotto-Canelo winner

golovkin9999(Photo credit: Will Hart, K2 Promotions) By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya says that when he made the fight between his fighter IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux (34-2, 31 KOs) and WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) for October 17th, he made it with the thought in mind to have a mini-middleweight tournament with the winner of the Golovkin-Lemieux fight to face the winner of the November 21st fight between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and former WBA/WBC 154lb champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

De La Hoya says if he gets his way, there will be an ultimate winner of those fights. However, De La Hoya has no control over Cotto, who is promoted by Roc Nation Sports, and it’s unclear whether Cotto will choose to face the Golovkin-Lemieux winner if he gets past Canelo.
