De La Hoya can forget Cotto-Canelo rematch

cotto444By Dan Ambrose: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya has been saying for weeks now that boxing fans shouldn’t push Canelo to fight Gennady Golovkin because Canelo’s fight against Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) might be competitive or it might bring in a ton of pay-per-view buys on HBO.

Now that we know that the fight wasn’t competitive tonight after Canelo’s easy win over a much lighter looking Cotto, it pretty much undercuts any argument that De La Hoya has for pushing for an immediate rematch between the two fighters.

De La Hoya expecting huge PPV numbers for Cotto-Canelo

1-cotto-vs-alvarez (10)By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya is setting himself up for as huge disappointment on Saturday night with his belief that the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Miguel Cotto fight will bring in a minimum of 1.5 million PPV buys on HBO. De La Hoya believes the fight can being in as much as 2.4 million buys on PPV. He also thinks that 1.5 to 2 million boxing fans will automatically purchase the fight on PPV, and then from there he predicts that the fight could get even more to pump up the sales to 2.4 million.

De La Hoya hoping Mayweather will fight Canelo next

1-canelo-cotto (9)By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya is hoping Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. will come out of retirement if/when he sees Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) defeat former WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) this Saturday night in their fight at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

De La Hoya would like to see his red rooster avenge his loss from two years ago in 2013, a fight in which Canelo was totally dominated in and badly exposed in getting totally outclassed.

De La Hoya: Canelo is coming into his “Man strength!”

1-cotto-canelo-nyc (6)By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya is very high on his fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) for his fight this Saturday night against Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs). De La Hoya thinks that Canelo isn’t the same fighter that was beaten by Floyd Mayweather Jr. and who struggled against Erislandy Lara just last year.

According to De La Hoya, Canelo is just now coming into his “man strength” at age 25. It’s unclear how his power would change that much from a year or two, but De La Hoya believes that Canelo is more powerful than he was before.

Mayweather: De La Hoya is just hoping Canelo beats Cotto

delahoya5By Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr. thinks that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez could have a tough time this Saturday night trying to beat Miguel Cotto in their HBO televised fight on PPV. Mayweather sees Canelo’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya hoping that Canelo, 25, can get past Cotto.

Mayweather isn’t too happy with De La Hoya after some of the recent comments he made about him in an interview with Playboy Magazine. De La Hoya made light of Mayweather’s accomplishments in beating Canelo two years ago by saying that Canelo was weight drained at the time due to the 152lb catch-weight for the fight, and that Canelo was too young to be fighting a star like Mayweather.

De La Hoya: Canelo isn’t ready to move up to 160

delahoya5By Dan Ambrose: Despite Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) consistently fighting in the middleweight division since 2014 and rehydrating to the mid-170s, his promoter Oscar De La Hoya says Canelo still isn’t ready to move up to 160lbs for his fights. De La Hoya says that when the 25-year-old Canelo is ready to fight at the full weight for the middleweight division at 160, then he’ll fight guys like IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs).

It’s unclear what weight Canelo will be weighing in when he and De La Hoya do finally feel comfortable for him to fight at 160. Right now, Canelo is rehydrating to as high as 175, which makes him bigger than Golovkin, who rehydrates to 170.

De La Hoya slams Mayweather

delahoya1By Dan Ambrose: Out of nowhere, Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya went after the recently retired Floyd Mayweather Jr. today, calling him “boring” in an interview with Playboy Magazine, and saying that the sport of boxing is better without him being there. De La Hoya said that Mayweather was more famous for his mouth than he was for his fighting, and that he’ll soon by forgotten as a fighter.

“Let’s face it; you were boring,” De La Hoya said about Mayweather to playboy.com. “Just take a look at your most recent performance, your last hurrah in the ring, a 12 round decision against Andre Berto. How to describe it? A bust? A disaster?”

Farewell Letter to Mayweather: Will Canelo Live up to it?

de la hoya95By Timothy Bladel: Unless you live under a rock, you’ve probably heard about Oscar De La Hoya’s titillating farewell letter to retired fighter Floyd Mayweather Jr. If not, it’s a good read. The kind of bravado that should make any boxing fan at least dream of a day when good fights are made for no other reason than they are good fights.

Then, we realize that the dream may already be dead. De La Hoya makes a bold claim his Golden Boy Promotions is built on taking risk. If that is true, then there is no reason that Canelo Saul Alverez shouldn’t fight Gennady Golovkin (GGG) should he beat Miguel Cotto on November 21st. Is De La Hoya giving Canelo a pass here?
