By Dan Ambrose: Last Saturday night’s exciting match between WBC super featherweight champion Francisco Vargas (23-0-2, 17 KOs) and former two division world champion Orlando Salido (43-13-4, 30 KOs) averaged an impressive 833,000 viewers with a peak of 954,000 viewers on HBO’s Boxing After Dark, according to Dan Rafael.

The judges scored the fight a 12 round draw by scoring it 115-113 for Vargas, 114-114, and 114-114. It was hard not to see Salido as the better fighter, as he was landing the harder shots and pushing the fight for the entire 12 rounds.

Arum: If Lomachenko beats Martinez, he wants Salido

By Dan Ambrose: If Vasyl Lomachenko (5-1, 3 KOs) can defeat WBO super featherweight champion Roman “Rocky” Martinez (29-2-3, 17 KOs) this Saturday night on HBO in their fight at Madison Square Garden’s Theater in New York, Lomachenko’s promoter Bob Arum wants to try and put a rematch together between Lomachenko and contender Orlando Salido.

Lomachenko, 28, lost to Salido two years ago by a close 12 round split decision. Lomachenko has won every fight he’s had since that time, and he’s interested in facing the 35-year-old Salido despite the fact that he came up empty last Saturday night in his title challenge against unbeaten WBC super featherweight champion Francisco “El Bandito” Vargas (23-0-2, 17 KOs) in their fight on HBO from the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Orlando Salido says he beat Francisco Vargas

salido86

By Dan Ambrose: #3 WBC super featherweight contender Orlando Salido (43-13-4, 30 KOs) thinks the judges badly got it wrong last Saturday night in scoring his bout against WBC super featherweight champion Francisco “El Bandito” Vargas (23-0-2, 17 KOs) a 12 round majority draw instead of giving him the victory at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. The judges scored the fight 114-114, 114-114 and 115-113 Vargas.

Salido, 35, feels he did more than enough to deserve the decision. Salido doesn’t know what the judges were seeing in the fight last night, because he felt that he landed the cleaner and harder shots throughout the 12 round fight.

In trying to explain why he lost the fight last night, he said he was also fighting Vargas’ promoters at Golden Boy Promotions as well as Vargas.

Francisco Vargas and Orlando Salido battle to draw

(Photo Credit: Tom Hogan/Golden Boy Promotions) LOS ANGELES (June 4, 2016) -WBC Super Featherweight World Champion Francisco “El Bandido” Vargas (23-0-2, 17 KOs) retained his title against former three-time world champion Orlando “Siri” Salido (42-13-4, 30 KOs, 1 NC) after going the distance in a 12-round blood bath before a nearly sold-out, raucous crowd of 7,378 at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. and televised live on HBO® Boxing AfterDark.

Salido and Vargas exchanged heavy blows in the first round, with Salido getting the better of Vargas in a flurry of punches late in the round. Round four saw Vargas injured, with blood pouring from a cut on his eye obtained by a head butt. The war continued on and brought the crowd to their feet in round six, where Vargas held Salido against the ropes several times with a flurry of punches. The warriors didn’t stop and kept the pressure on each other until round 12, which saw Vargas and Salido laying into one another relentlessly until the bell.

Salido robbed against Vargas

vargas22

(Photo Credit: Tom Hogan/Golden Boy Promotions) By Dan Ambrose: In what has to be seen as another robbery, WBC super featherweight champion Francisco Vargas (23-0-2, 17 KOs) was given a 12 round draw against former two time world champion Orlando Salido (43-13-4, 30 KOs) on Saturday night at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. Vargas was cut over both eyes in suffering cuts in the 4th and 5th rounds. It looked like the scar tissue from around Vargas’ eyes gave way.

It’s not surprising because Vargas’ right eye looked like hamburger from his last fight against Takashi Miura last November. As bad as Vargas’ eye looked in that fight, there was no way it was going to hold up tonight from the pounding he was taking from Salido. Vargas didn’t handle fighting with cuts too well. He was complaining about Salido accidentally clashing heads with him. Instead of realizing that bumping heads is part of the sport, Vargas complained about it.

Vargas – Salido ends in draw – results

(Photo Credit: Tom Hogan/Golden Boy Promotions) By Jim Dower: WBC super featherweight champion Francisco Vargas (23-0-2, 17 KOs) wilted down the stretch but was still able to scrape out a 12 round draw tonight against #3 WBC Orlando Salido (43-13-4, 30 KOs) in a fight televised by HBO Championship Boxing from the StubHub Center in Carson, California. The judges saw the fight 114-114, 114-114 and 115-113 for Vargas.

You can argue that Salido should have edged the fight, but he was facing a champion. To beat a champion, you need to do more than judge defeat them by two to four rounds. You need to put them on the canvas and give them a good shellacking. Salido didn’t do that tonight. He just showed that he was better than Vargas and that he was the slightly better fighter tonight. That wasn’t going to be enough for him to get the win.

Vargas and Salido make weight

salido75

(Photo credit: Chris Farina/Team Salido) By Jim Dower: WBC super featherweight champion Francisco Vargas (23-0-1, 17 KOs) weighed in successfully on Friday in coming in at 129.6 pounds for his first defense of his WBC title against #3 WBC Orlando “Siri” Salido (43-13-3, 30 KOs) for their fight on Saturday night on HBO Championship Boxing at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Salido, 30, weighed in right at the super featherweight upper limit at 130lbs. You have to wonder how much weight Salido will gain back after he rehydrates. He looked really big fight his fight against Vasyl Lomachenko a couple of years when he weighed in heavy for that fight, and then ballooned up in weight after the weigh-in. Lomachenko was arguably beaten by weight more than by the talent of Salido.

Are Bandido Vargas and Siri Salido fighting to honor Mexican Boxing?

Image: Are Bandido Vargas and Siri Salido fighting to honor Mexican Boxing?

By Gerardo Granados: Are you ready? This Saturday on June 4, at the Stub Hub Center, California, USA, WBC super featherweight champion Francisco “Bandido” Vargas (23-0-1, 17 KOs) will try to defend his title against a rugged veteran, former titlist Orlando “Siri” Salido (43-13-3, 30 KOs). In this particular type of fights it is possible to not to require judges. In fact, this is a fight that not a single hard core fight fan can miss; maybe the boxing purist could also join us that night, because this bout has fight of the year potential written all over it since it was signed.

Today both fighters made the super featherweight limit, Vargas hit the scales at 129.6 and Salido 130 pounds. So the fight is on and I can wait for them to climb into the ring. Against Takashi Miura last November 2015, Bandido Vargas won by TKO9/12 and was awarded the fight of the year by The Ring Magazine and Boxingnews24. It was a great battle and if by any chance the reader hasn’t seen it yet, well then you should better search for it and enjoy.
