Braehmer’s promoter talks Cleverly fight

cleverly677

By Scott Gilfoid: Kalle Sauerland, the promoter for WBA World light heavyweight champion Juergen Braehmer (48-2, 35 KOs), recently made an odd choice in selecting the struggling, some say ‘over-the-hill’, former WBO 175lb champion Nathan Cleverly (29-3, 15 KOs) as the German Braehmer’s next opponent for his title defense on October 1 in Germany. It was a weird choice by Sauerland for him to pick Cleverly as an opponent for Braehmer, because his career is been sagging for the last several years.

Cleverly has lost two out of his last three fights and three out of his last six. Sauerland seems to be making a fight many years too late. At the minimum, the Braehmer vs. Cleverly fight is three years late, because that’s when Cleverly’s career started going into a steep downward nosedive with him losing to Sergey Kovalev by a 4th round knockout in 2013.

Losses to Tony Bellew and Andrzej Fonfara have quickly followed for Cleverly. He’s now coming off a loss to Fonfara, and heading towards journeyman status. I don’t see the 29-year-old Clevelry being able to pull his career out of the nosedive that it’s right now, because the dvisiion has improved too much for him to do anything.

Juergen Braehmer fights Nathan Cleverly on Oct.1

cleverly444

By Scott Gilfoid: Despite having lost two out of his last three fights, former WBO 175lb champion Nathan Cleverly (29-3, 15 KOS) will be getting a title shot against WBA World light heavyweight champion Juergen Braehmer (48-2, 35 KOs) on October 1 at the Jahnsportforum in Neubrandenburg, Germany.

Cleverly, 29, was beaten in his last fight by Andrzej Fonfara by a 12 round unanimous decision last October in Chicago, Illinois. In November 2014, Cleverly was beaten by Tony Bellew by a 12 round split decision. Cleverly’s only win in the last two years was against journeyman Tomas Man last year in May 2015.

Cleverly’s promoter Eddie Hearn thinks he can beat Braehmer. I don’t agree at all. Cleverly is a decent fringe level guy, but he doesn’t have enough pop in his punches to beat Braehmer.

Nathan Cleverly vs. Juergen Braehmer in the works for September

cleverly6777

By Eric Baldwin: Former WBO 175lb champion Nathan Cleverly (29-3, 15 KOs) could be challenging for a world title in September against WBA World light heavyweight champion Juergen Braehmer (48-2, 35 KOs), according to Dan Rafael. Cleverly, 29, had been the leading option for former WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward’s next fight on July 30 at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. There has been too much waiting on the negotiations and Cleverly appears to be moving on inside.

Cleverly, #10 WBC, isn’t the ideal opponent that you want to see fighting for a world title, because he’s lost two out of his last three fight in the last two years. It’s gets worse than that. Cleverly has lost three out of his last six fights.

He’s not exactly world title challenger material compared to some of the other available contenders that Braehmer could be facing Artur Beterbiev, Dmitry Bivol or Andrzej Fonfara, fighter that Cleverly just lost to October 2015. However, when you look at the type of fighters that Braehmer has exclusively been facing since he picked up the WBA title in December 2013, Cleverly is the typical opponent.

Nathan Cleverly leading candidate for Andre Ward’s July 30 fight

cleverly677

By Scott Gilfoid: An offer has reportedly been made from light heavyweight Andre Ward’s promoters at Roc Nation Sports to the promoters for former WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (29-3, 15 KOs) for a fight on July 30 at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.

Cleverly, 29, would be Ward’s tune-up opponent to help get him ready for a title shot against IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev in November. Roc Nation Sports gave the offer to Cleverly’s promoters at Matchroom Sport, according to Dan Rafael.

Cleverly’s career has really bottomed out lately, and it’s surprising he’s even ranked in the top 15 with the sanctioning bodies. Cleverly was blasted out in four rounds by Kovalev three years ago in 2013.

Andre Ward vs. Nathan Cleverly possible for July 30

cleverly444

By Jeff Aranow: Former super middleweight champion Andre Ward (29-0, 15 KOs) is looking for a tune-up opponent for his next fight on July 30, and former WBO 175lb champion Nathan Cleverly (29-3, 15 KOs) is one of the leading names that is being discussed, according to Dan Rafael.

Ward needs a tune-up to get him ready for his November fight against IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev. Cleverly isn’t a big puncher and is nothing like Kovalev.

If Ward wants an opponent that will get him ready for Kovalev, then he needs another opponent that has better power than Cleverly. Ward would be better off facing someone like Eleider Alvarez rather than Cleverly. Even Andrazej Fonfara would be better than Cleverly.

Hearn: Cleverly’s broken nose confirmed

KB7A9156(Photo credit: David Earnisse/Premier Boxing Champions) By Scott Gilfoid: Nathan Cleverly’s promoter Eddie Hearn has confirmed that Cleverly, 28, suffered a broken nose last night in his disappointing 12 round unanimous decision loss to the talented/hard hitting Andrzej Fonfara (28-3, 16 KOs) in their clash at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, Illinois.

Despite Cleverly losing the fight and getting his nose broken, this was one of those exciting fights of the year due to the back and forth action that went on for 12 rounds. Even in the final round, the battered and bloody Cleverly continued to battle hard to try and get the victory. But as I predicted, Fonfara was just too strong, too power and too talented for Cleverly to handle.

Fonfara defeats Cleverly in thrilling war!

KB7A8653(Photo credit: David Earnisse/Premier Boxing Champions) By Scott Gilfoid: #2 WBC light heavyweight contender Andrzej Fonfara (28-3, 16 KOs) busted up former WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (29-3, 15 KOs) in handing him his third defeat of his career in beating him by a 12 round unanimous decision on Premier Boxing Champions on Spike TV from the UIC Pavilion, in Chicago, Illinois.

The final judges’ scores were 115-113, 116-112 and 116-112.

Fonfara busted Cleverly’s nose in the 7th round, and the fight for all intents and purposes was over from that point. Cleverly was taking vicious head shots and throwing back with nothing on his punches at all. The difference in power between the two fighters in the 2nd half of the fight was dramatic. Cleverly had good power in the first three rounds, but he really lost it.

Will Andrzej Fonfara finish off Nathan Cleverly’s career tonight?

fonfara64643By Scott Gilfoid: The one-time former WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (29-2, 15 KOs) will pretty much have his career on the line tonight when he faces the talented and incredibly powerful #3 WBC 175lb contender Andrzej Fonfara (27-3, 16 KOs) in a do-or-die fight on Premier Boxing Champions on Spike from the beautiful UIC Pavilion, in Chicago, Illinois.

Cleverly has lost 2 out of his last 5 fights, and he’s not beaten anyone good in the last four years since 2011. I must say that things are looking pretty bleak for Cleverly’s career. A loss for Cleverly in this fight will put him in a place where I don’t think he’ll be able to dig himself out of.
