Image: Pacquiao’s April 14th fight expected to be finalized this week

By Stanley White: Manny Pacquiao’s next fight on April 14th is said to be close to being finalized this week by his promoter Bob Arum. According to the LA Times, the leading candidate to face the 39-year-old Pacquiao is the ring warn and badly faded Mike Alvarado, a fighter that is the downside of his career at 37. However, Alvarado is promoted by the same promoter as Pacquiao (59-7-2, 38 KOs) in Bob Arum of Top Rank, so it makes him a good choice for an in house fight. Pacquiao fighting Alvarado is a terrible match if the idea is to put on an exciting fight for the fans. It would have been a good fight 6 years ago before Alvarado started losing repeatedly, but it’s horrible fight now. Pacquiao doesn’t need tune-ups against journeyman fighters like Alvarado.

By Patrick McHugh: Former WBO light welterweight champion Mike Alvarado (35-4, 24 KOs) will be fighting this Saturday night on June 25 against Josh Torres (15-4-2, 7 KOs0 at the Bomb Factory in Dallas, Texas. This will be the second fight for the 35-year-old Alvarado for what some boxing fans see as a comeback from three consecutive losses he suffered 2013 to 2015.

Alvarado was out of the ring for over a year after his 3rd round knockout to Brandon Rios in January 2015 to March 2016, when he came back to defeat journeyman Saul Corral by a third round knockout.

Alvarado is said to have his head on straight now and is in great condition to get his career back on track to where it was four years ago before things soured for him. Torres, 26, doesn’t have the kind of talent to give Alvarado any problems in this fight.

Diaz stops Garcia; Alvarado defeats Corral – results

alvarado5By Jim Dower: 32-year-old former lightweight champion Juan Diaz (41-4, 20 KOs) battered an over-matched but game Fernando Garcia (30-8-2, 19 KOs) for eight rounds until finally stopping him in the 9th round on Saturday night in a fight held at light welterweight at the Arena Theatre in Houston, Texas. This was far from an easy fight for Diaz, as he took a lot of head shots from Garcia at close range. Diaz had to basically tough it out against the journeyman Garcia. The fact that Diaz struggled to defeat Garcia suggests that he’s going to have problems later one when/if he faces a contender in the lightweight division.

Diaz knocked Garcia down in the 9th round with a storm of shots to the head and body. After Garcia got back up, Diaz unloaded on him until referee Laurence Cole pulled the plug on the fight in halting it at 2:24 of the round.

Diaz landed a lot of shots in the fight, but either lacked the power or Garcia had a great chin. It looked a little of both. Diaz’s power wasn’t devastating compared to some of the lightweights in the division. He had to hit Garcia with everything but the kitchen sink but it didn’t do much to him.

Mike Alvarado and Juan Diaz in action on March 19 in Houston, TX

alvarado665By Dan Ambrose: Former WBO light welterweight champion Mike Alvarado (34-4, 23 KOs) and former IBF/WBA/WBO lightweight Juan Diaz (40-4, 19 KOs) will be sharing the same card in separate fights next month on March 19 in Houston, Texas.

Houston native Diaz will be in the main event. Alvarado will be competing in the co-feature bout. Hopefully both fighters don’t disappoint the local boxing fans that will be showing up to see them perform.

The opponents for Alvarado and Diaz are still unknown at this point, but they’re not likely to be world beaters because both guys are trying to get back to fighting at the world level after missing a lot of action.
