By Jeff Aranow: Trainer Freddie Roach wants his inactive fighter Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) to step inside the ring with IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs). Roach says Cotto can beat Golovkin because he’s the better boxer. He says he’ll beat Golovkin just like he beat Saul Canelo Alvarez in 2015. For the record, Canelo beat Cotto but he was given a questionable 12 round decision. A lot of boxing fans thought Cotto deserved the win or the very least a draw against Canelo. The judges spoke, and they gave the ‘W’ to Canelo.

By Dan Ambrose: Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) is being talked about returning to the ring on June 24 against possibly 34-year-old #10 WBA, #12 WBO, #13 WBC junior middleweight Yoshihiro Kamegai (27-3-2, 24 KOs). Cotto hasn’t fought in a 1 ½ years since losing to Saul Canelo Alvarez by a 12 round decision in November 2015. Cotto, 36, took 2016 off from boxing. He probably would have fought if he could have gotten a fight against 43-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez, but he wasn’t able to negotiate the fight.

Image: Roach: It’s now or never for Cotto-Marquez fight

By Allan Fox: Freddie Roach says it’s time that Juan Manuel Marquez take the fight with Miguel Cotto, because they don’t have time for him to take tune-up fights to get ready for a fight. Cotto will be retiring at the end of this year. He can’t wait for Marquez. Roach says that Cotto will fight Marquez at 147 if that’s what weight he wants. He believes that Cotto can get his weight to that level if he has to make the fight happen.

By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach says he’d be interested his fighter Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) fighting middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) right now after the way he performed in his last fight against Daniel Jacobs. Roach thought Golovkin did enough to win the fight against Jacobs, but he says he was “exposed” in the process of winning the fight. Roach still considers the 34-year-old Golovkin as a very good fighter despite his problems in the ring against Jacobs.

Cotto vs. Marquez negotiations going well for September

Image: Cotto vs. Marquez negotiations going well for September

By Dan Ambrose: James Kirkland pulling out of his February 25 fight against former four division world champion Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) has been great news for Mexican warrior Juan Manuel Marquez (57-7-1, 40 KOs), as him and Cotto are in negotiations for a fight in September on HBO pay-per-view.

Marquez will be turning 44-years-old on August 23, but his advanced age likely won’t keep the Cotto-Marquez fight from doing well on HBO PPV if the fans remember who he is. Marquez has been out of the ring for nearly 3 years, but Cotto still wants to fight him.

Cotto: Marquez is a great fight

Image: Cotto: Marquez is a great fight

By Dan Ambrose: With James Kirkland having pulled out of the February 25th fight on HBO PPV, Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) is now interested in fighting the inactive 43-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KOs). Cotto reportedly sees the fight against Marquez as a great fight despite the fact that the Mexican fighter hasn’t fought in three years since 2014.

You can argue that a fight against Marquez might be a good one in comparison to Cotto’s previously scheduled opponent Kirkland, but it’s still hardly a good fight. When you’re talking about fighting someone who hasn’t fought in 3 years and is now 43-years-old like Marquez, it’s not a great fight for boxing fans hoping to get good fight for their money.
