Will Cotto vacate his WBC title if forced to fight Golovkin?

cotto6788By Dan Ambrose: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) will be facing WBC interim middleweight champion Marco Antonio Rubio (59-6-1, 51 KOs) on October 18th at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

With Rubio’s WBC interim 160 pound title on the line for the fight in addition to Golovkin’s WBA title, we could in theory see a situation where Golovin could become Cotto’s WBC mandatory if he beats Rubio.

Roach: Golovkin brings nothing to the table for Cotto, he’s a protected fighter

roach9By Dan Ambrose: Freddie Roach, the trainer for WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs), says right now WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) isn’t someone they’re looking at to match up against Cotto.

Roach feels that Golovkin brings very little to a Cotto fight because he’s never fought anyone who he feels is a good fighter, and he doesn’t see Golovkin as a pay-per-view fighter. Surprisingly, Roach thinks that Golovkin is a protected fighter because he hasn’t fought the top guys like Peter Quillin and Daniel Jacobs.

Cotto, Alvarez, Golovkin the 3 man collision course

cotto552By D.A: It’s no secret the most exciting weight divisions to the boxing world and family is the 140-160 range. Of course most of us can agree 147 is the most watched and exciting weight division. The 2nd in my opinion would be the 154/160 divisions in a draw. Recently we’ve seen the best 154 and 160 fighters all win their bouts and fans are calling for all 3 to fight at some point.

That would be Miguel Cotto, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. Boxing fans have been wanting to see Miguel Cotto square off with GGG to see who is the best middleweight fighter in the world. While Golovkin is a title holder he is not the legitimate champion. Cotto captured the 160 crown after beating the former Middleweight king Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez.

Canelo wants Cotto’s WBC 160lb title, says trainer Reynoso

canelo400By Dan Ambrose: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s trainer/manager Eddy Reynoso says that Canelo wants to capture Miguel Cotto’s WBC middleweight title. He wants that belt. He doesn’t care if the fight takes place at a catch-weight of 155lbs, as long as he can get a shot at Cotto’s 160 pound title.

Canelo will be fighting in December and not November, because they want to limit the amount of time that he sits idle while waiting for the fight against Cotto next May. If Canelo fights in December, he’ll then only need to wait 5 months for the Cotto fight.

Arum saving Canelo vs. Cotto for May 2015

canelo1111By Chris Williams: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum ruled out once again a fight between his guy WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) and former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) for Cotto’s next fight date on December 13th at Madison Square Garden in New York.

A match-up between Cotto and #8 WBO Andy Lee has already been talked about as possibly happening on this date, but fans have been generally cool to the idea of those two facing each other. It’s seen as too much of a mismatch in the eyes of fans. Arum still isn’t interested in putting together the Cotto vs. Canelo fight for December despite that being the match-up fans want to see. They’re not interested in seeing those two guys in preliminary bouts. It looks like Arum wants to let the Cotto-Canelo fight marinate a little longer like he did the Juan Manuel Lopez vs. Yuriorkis Gamboa fight that never took place.

Dibella: Miguel Cotto vs. Andy Lee is tremendous fight!

cotto56678By Dan Ambrose: Promoter Lou Dibella is excited at the thought of his fighter #8 WBO Andy Lee (33-2, 23 KOs) potentially ending up as the next opponent for WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) next December.

Cotto reportedly doesn’t want to take a risky fight against someone that is good enough to potentially beat him and mess up his plans for a mega payday against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez next May on Cinco de Mayo. And that’s where 30-year-old Andy Lee comes in.

Golovkin will need to wait on Cotto fight

golovkin994By Allan Fox: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) is going to need to stay busy for his next fight this year in October or November, because the fighter that he wants, WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs), is being mentioned as possibly fighting #8 WBO Andy Lee on December 13th instead of Cotto.

Freddie Roach, the trainer for Cotto, wants the Golovkin fight because he sees him as beatable at catch-weight of 155, but the fight is going to need to wait for a little while longer because Cotto has a big money match-up against popular Mexican mega-star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez for early 2015 if Cotto’s promoters at Top Rank and Canelo’s promoters at Golden Boy Promotions can iron out a deal between them.

Roach has no problem with Cotto vs GGG fight

golovkin7356By T.B: According to ESPN’s Dan Rafael Hall of fame trainer Freddie Roach has no problem with a Miguel Cotto vs Gennady “GGG” Golovkin fight. This coming on the heels of GGG’s “calling out” of Cotto after his KO win over game but completely out classed Daniel Geale.

Roach was in NY with his fighter Glen Tapia for an undercard bout which ended up getting canceled. Instead of packing up and heading home Roach turned the trip into a “scouting” trip.

Roach was in the crowd at Madison Square Garden and came away impressed but not so impressed that he was scared off a possible Cotto vs GGG fight in the future. Roach said a GGG fight is second on his list behind a proposed super fight with Canelo Alvarez which would take place on Cinco De Mayo weekend 2015. When asked Roach said,” I like the Canelo fight better, but I like a fight with GGG second”. I’m assuming By second Roach means as an alternative to Canelo if negotiations fall through, or second as in after the Canelo fight.

Roach: I’d want Golovkin to come down to 154 for Cotto

roach564By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach says that for a fight between Cotto and WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin to take place it require that Golovkin come down to 154 because Roach thinks that Golovkin is too big and strong at 160 for Cotto, according to ESPN’s Dan Rafael.

Roach was at Golovkin’s fight against Daniel Geale last Saturday night and he came away from that fight impressed with Golovkin’s power but he still saw weakness areas that he thinks Cotto could exploit. Roach thinks Golovkin has defensive problems, and he thinks he’s been fighting middle of the road guys.

Miguel Cotto vs. Andy Lee possible for December 13th on HBO

lee91By Dan Ambrose: #8 WBO, #9 WBA, #12 IBF former world title challenger Andy Lee (33-2, 23 KOs) is being mentioned as a possible opponent for WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto’s next fight on December 13th fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to Steve Kim.

Cotto’s next fight won’t be on HBO pay-per-view. Instead, it’s going to be on regular HBO, which is a pretty good indication that Cotto will be fighting Lee or some other non-star.

Fighting Lee isn’t going to help Cotto’s case in trying to show that he’s the best middleweight in the division. With Gennady Golovkin willing to fight anybody in the division, it’s going to make Cotto look kind of bad if he faces Andy Lee, because it’s going to look like Cotto or his management have doubts about whether he’s good enough to beat a high quality top 5 contender at 160. Lee isn’t ranked in the top 5.
