Do you remember the Miguel Cotto vs Kelson Pinto fight?

By Gerardo Granados: On September 11th of 2004, at the Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot, Hato Rey, Puerto Rico; two undefeated contenders battled for the vacant WBO light welterweight championship. On one corner Miguel Cotto W20(16)-L0-D0 Height 5¨7” Reach 67”, on the other corner Kelson Pinto W21(19)-L0-D0 Height 5´10 ½ “. I think on that night Pinto looked way bigger than Cotto but you can also tell that Miguel had talent, his boxing stance and the way he walked in the ring.

Roach: Cotto and Pacquiao are better than Mayweather now

roach6777By Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach is still stewing about WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) showing little interest in fighting his No.1 guy WBO 147 pound champion Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KOs) in a mega-fight.

Roach has recently been saying that the only reason why Mayweather has shown no interest in that fight is because he feels he’s a shot fighter whose legs are gone. In a recent interview, Roach continued along that theme with him believing Mayweather has lost a few steps and can no longer move like he used to.

Canelo wants Cotto fight to take place in Las Vegas

canelo90By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and trainer Freddie Roach are going to need forget about fighting former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez at Madison Square Garden in New York; because Canelo says he’s interested in fighting Cotto in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Roach recently spoke of wanting Canelo to travel to New York to fight Cotto in front of his own fans, but he thinks Canelo will be afraid to do that. I’m not sure if it’s fear of Cotto for Canelo possibly not being keen on the idea of fighting in front of a large pro-Cotto crowd in New York, but rather Canelo not wanting to put himself in the position where he could end up losing the fight by a controversial decision.

Golovkin: I think Miguel Cotto is too small for the middleweight division

golovkin6666By Dan Ambrose: In what has to be taken as a warning for WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs), what 160 pound champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) said that he thinks the tiny 5’7” Cotto is too small to be fighting in the middleweight division.

Golovkin says he believes that Cotto is just doesn’t have the size to be fighting in the 160 pound weight class, and believes that Marco Antonio Rubio (59-6-1, 51 KOs) is the toughest challenge he has I the division, not Cotto.

Cotto is the exact same size at the 5’7” Curtis Stevens, a fighter that Golovkin bludgeoned for 8 one-sided rounds last November until the fight was finally halted in the 8th. Stevens has the same kind of punching power that Cotto has.

Miguel Cotto ordered to defend WBC title against Golovkin vs. Rubio winner

cotto56678By Cameron Gillon: The WBC have officially ordered that their middleweight champion Miguel Cotto defend his newly won title against the winner of October’s middleweight clash between IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin and Marco Antonio Rubio.

This is a good call from the WBC as Cotto is not seen as a real middleweight. He won the title off of a injury prone and past his prime Sergio Martinez. Rubio currently holds the WBC interim title which means this title will be on the line in his fight against Golovkin also so if Golovkin wins he will become Cotto’s mandatory challenger for the WBC belt and this will not amuse Miguel Cotto at all.

Trout wants Canelo, Cotto and Lara after one more tune-up fight

trout33By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA 154 pound champion Austin Trout (27-2, 14 KOs) says he wants one more tune-up fight to get the rust out before he goes after the top tier fighters. Trout, 28, specifically wants rematches with Miguel Cotto, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Erislandy Lara.

Trout beat Cotto in 2012, but then lost to both Canelo and Lara by 12 round decisions. Trout fought well enough to deserve a win in the Canelo fight, but he was up against it by facing a popular fighter like Canelo in Texas. It was a situation where Trout needed to really pound Canelo if he had wanted to get a win.
