Cotto to fight just once more after Kirkland fight

Image: Cotto to fight just once more after Kirkland fight

By Dan Ambrose: Former four division world champion Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) plans on fighting just one more time before retiring after his February 25 fight against James Kirkland (32-2, 28 KOs) on HBO PPV at the Ford Center at The Star, in Frisco, Texas. Cotto, 36, says he once big name for his last fight otherwise he’s going to forget about the fight.

With 2017 being Cotto’s last year in boxing, he’s going to be kind of limited when it comes to getting a big name for him to fight. Cotto hasn’t shown much interest in facing the top fighters at 154 like the Charlo brothers, Erislandy Lara, Julian Williams and Demetrius Andrade.

Cotto-Kirkland: Is this PPV worthy?

Image: Cotto-Kirkland: Is this PPV worthy?

By Chris Williams: Earlier today, the news of the Miguel Cotto vs. James Kirkland fight was made official with the fight taking place on HBO PPV on Feb.25 at the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas. There’s no word yet on how much the Cotto-Kirkland fight will sell for on HBO pay-per-view.

Hopefully, it’s a good price, because this is NOT a championship level fight between Cotto and Kirkland. It’s two aging fighters coming off of a LONG layoff of over one year with both of them having been beaten soundly by Saul Canelo Alvarez in their last fights.

Given those circumstances, it makes sense for the Cotto-Kirkland fight to go for a nice price for the boxing fans. I personally think the Cotto vs. Kirkland fight would sell quite well if it were to be sold on PPV for around $2 dollars.

Miguel Cotto vs. James Kirkland to be officially announced for 2/25

Image: Miguel Cotto vs. James Kirkland to be officially announced for 2/25

By Dan Ambrose: Miguel Cotto’s February 25th fight against James Kirkland (32-2, 28 KOs) to be officially announce this Monday, December 19 for their 153 pound catchweight fight on HBO pay-per-view at the Ford Center at The Star Frisco, Texas. There’s a great deal of criticism the Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) vs. Kirkland fight is already receiving from boxing fans, because many of them see it as poor fight for Cotto.

The tickets for the Cotto-Kirkland fight go on sale this Thursday on 12/22. The tickets can be purchased at Ticketmaster.com. This is going to be a tough sale to get the boxing public interested in paying to see the fight on HBO PPV.

Miguel Cotto vs. James Kirkland at 153lb catchweight

Image: Miguel Cotto vs. James Kirkland at 153lb catchweight

By Dan Ambrose: Miguel Cotto has reportedly signed the contract to fight 32-year-old James Kirkland on February 25 at a catchweight of 153 pounds on HBO pay-per-view at the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas. Having Cotto-Kirkland on HBO PPV could result in very few buys. I’m not sure what Cotto and his promoters at Roc Nation Sports are expecting in terms of buys for the fight. It might be quite low. Cotto is big name, but this an awful fight. It might not even bring in 100,000 buys on HBO PPV. If they’re good with a low number of buys that the Cotto-Kirkland fight bring in, then it might not be bad to have it on PPV.

Cotto will be trained by Freddie Roach, who has turned his career around more or less since his back to back losses to Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Austin Trout four years ago. Cotto could probably beat Kirkland even without a trainer. I don’t think Cotto needs Roach for him to beat an inactive guy like Kirkland.

Miguel Cotto vs. James Kirkland likely on Feb.25

1-Alvarez-Cotto (5)

By Dan Ambrose: Miguel Cotto will be returning to the ring in two months from now on February 25 against James Kirkland on HBO PPV at the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas. The contract hasn’t yet been signed for the Cotto-Kirkland fight, but it appears the fight is going to happen.

Kirkland, 32, is from Texas, and he’s got a fan base there. Having the fight on HBO pay-per-view is the odd thing. The success of the Canelo-Kirkland fight might depend on the older boxing fans, who remember Kirkland from seven years ago when his career was doing well.

Miguel Cotto to fight on February 25

cotto92

By Dan Ambrose: Former four division world champion Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) will be fighting in early 2017 on February 25 against a still to be determined opponent, according to RingTV. Cotto’s fight is expected to be televised on HBO pay-per-view. Cotto will be fighting at junior middleweight for his February 25 fight.

The potential venue is at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. This is the same place where Saul Canelo Alvarez recently fought WBO junior middleweight champion Liam Smith on September 17 in front of 51,000 fans. Having the fight in Texas would normally make one think that Cotto could be fighting a popular Mexican fighter like Canelo, but in this case it doesn’t appear that he’s the option.

Canelo vs. Cotto rematch possible early 2017

1-canelo-cotto-results (14)

By Dan Ambrose: A rematch between former four division world champion Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) and WBO junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) is being talked about in the four quarter of 2017. Canelo, 26, says he wants to fight the 35-year-old Cotto a second time. It’s not surprising that a rematch between Canelo and Cotto is now being talked about.

Their fight in 2015 brought in 900,000 pay-per-view buys on HBO. With that many buys, it goes without saying that they’ll be fighting each other again. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya was talking about possible two or three fights between them. If that’s the case, then it might be a while before Canelo faces IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs).

Miguel Cotto won’t fight until 2017

1-canelo-cotto-results (16)

By Dan Ambrose: Former four division world champion Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) has decided to stay outside of the ring for the remainder of 2016 so that he can test up for 2016, according to ESPN. Cotto will be turning 36-years-old on October 29, and he hasn’t fought at all in 2016 since his 12 round decision loss to Saul Canelo Alvarez last November in 2015.

When Cotto does return to the ring in 2017, he could be facing the likes of Lamont Peterson or Tim Bradley (33-2-1, 13 KOs). Both of them are aging welterweights, who haven’t been active lately. Bradley fought only once in 2016 in losing to Manny Pacquiao last April.

Marquez wants Cotto fight at 148

cotto931111

By Dan Ambrose: If 43-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez gets his way, he’ll be soon facing former four division world champion Miguel Cotto at 148 pounds. The two fighters attempted to put together a fight not long ago, but they were unable to agree on the weight. Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KOs), who started his career out at featherweight, didn’t want to move up to fight the 35-year-old Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) at a catchweight of 150lbs.

It’s unknown if Cotto is still even interested in the Marquez fight. It was thought that Cotto had moved on in looking at other options like Brandon Rios and possibly Kell Brook. Cotto would be better off if he would just fight already against a top contender at 154 rather than wasting time trying to put together fights against beatable smaller guys like Rios, Brook or Marquez. Cotto has been out of the ring for 11 months now since his 12 round decision defeat at the hands of Saul Canelo Alvarez in November 2015.

Ingle: Kell Brook wants next fight in early 2017

1-o2arena-golovkin-brook-88

By Scott Gilfoid: Kell Brook has already had surgery on his broken right eye socket that he suffered against knockout artist Gennady Golovkin earlier this month on September 10 in London. Brook wants to get back inside the ring in early 2017 to resume his career. When Brook does get back into action again, he only wants to be fighting the best in boxing.

Brook specifically wants Saul Canelo Alvarez, Amir Khan and Miguel Cotto. That sounds like a good plan on the face of it, as Brook (36-1, 25 KOs) might be able to get one of those names to fight him straightaway in early 2017. However, it might become increasingly difficult for Brook to get all of those big names to fight him unless he starts winning again.
